Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Related to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/325324

While Debian freezes Hebrew translation in terminal, Ubuntu keeps importing them. It is most annoying and should be stopped.

Eyal, I'm also following bug #263822, but I still do not understand how Debian disables translations of CLI applications in Hebrew.

Could you please give some more details of how this is done? Perhaps then we could see if we can use the same solution.

You can just remove "he" from the translation list at po/LINGUAS. The makefile needs to read that list...

See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=534992 regarding apt in Debian.

Here is the list of CLI apps https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuHebrewTranslators/CLI

Since we did not manage to talk about this issue durring the latest Ubuntu Translation meetings I think we should schedule a special meeting for this topic.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/Meetings/2009-11-05

Maybe we can find a way for tagging debian package as CLI apps and change lang-o-matic to ignore HE translations for those packages

"and if the app has CLI and GUI?"

Usually there would be different binaries, each using a different mo file. Build on the mo file for the gui binary.

As to my comment from 2009-06-28 - the title of this bug should be "stop *building* ..." and not "stop importing...".
The maintainers of each package can decide which translations to build. And that will also mean smaller diff comparing to Debian.

Lior, can you give us an example of such application?

I think we should discuss each case.

As a first step we should talk about Ubuntu packages from the main repository.

I don't know if Ubuntu package mainainers will be happy to patch each package so that it will not build the HE translations.

Not importing them in Launchpad Translations will imply not building those translations.

There will be minimal changes in the package and all major changes will be done in lang-o-matic and other extenal scripts,

I still think we should have a meeting for discussing those decisions

Since this function already exist in Debian there shouldn't be any special
problem... this job can be imported instead of reprogrammed, am I right
Lior?

Adi - the Hebrew translation is disabled for apt-get in Debian.
Yaron - this "job" should be already built in the package makefiles, or can be added quite easily.

I'm not following lanuchpad, mail me if needed.

CLI strings should be translated to Hebrew since we are still experiencing several bugs with the handling of RTL languages in vte.

This applies to Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Divehi and so on...

We are translating CLI apps nowadays, most modern terminal emulators can handle RTL quite well, there is still some work to do outside the graphical environment but overall it's pretty safe to do so.
We can mark this one as won't fix, thanks.
