intrepid session dialog experience

On Desktop Experience we've talked about putting this into the fast user switching applet. I promise I'll clean up a patch and such next week when I'm back home.

I have not followed all Desktop meeting on this, so can you guys explain to me (and others reading this) why having two very un-functional menus to deal with a session a low priority?

The fact that the current menus don't work properly is a separate bug, which
is targeted for Intrepid and of importance 'High' (bug 250506).

The fact that they don't look the way we want them to look is also an issue,
but less urgent than that one.

Two possible solutions were mentioned elsewhere (from upstream and Ted
Gould) and we should find out what's happening there before making any snap
decisions. I'm waiting to hear back from Ted.

Sebastien, can you tell us any more about what's happening upstream?

upstream is going to change the dialog, that should land to intrepid today or tomorrow when new tarballs are rolled

you can see screenshots of the new dialogs on http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=507101

they will still have two dialogs but once those changes have landed we can consider whether we want to use the new upstream look and maybe list all the options in one dialog or if we want to roll back to what ubuntu was using between dapper and hardy

These are an improvement on the current dialogs, particularly in that
Suspend and Hibernate are available.

It looks like Ted's changes to the presence applet add "close session",
"reboot" and "shutdown" to the menu, so this may be a third option.

I found the new dialogs In the system menu, now there is three menus: Lock screen, Logout and shudown. There is nothin wrong with that, but when i press the computer power button, why the logout dialog is shown?

I'm not at all clear on what's left to be done here; Seb, could you please comment on what the planned fix is (since this bug is milestoned)?

the topic has been discussed during the previous desktop team meeting, the consensus was to use the current intrepid dialog and to change the applet it the corner to be the fast user switching one and not the session button, the change is in intrepid but configurations are not migrated to the new layout on upgrade, see bug #274146

My resulting bug reports: bug 269478, bug 269500, bug 269502, bug 269504, and <http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=507101#c23>.

There is no sensible way to convey that there are half a dozen different variations on quitting an Ubuntu session, because that's not a sensible situation. Our current long-term plan for solving this is described in <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/Specs/ExitStrategy>.

Until that is implemented, I would have preferred not to have any changes to the Quit dialog used from Dapper to Hardy, because people would then need to relearn the interface twice (once now, once then) rather than once. However, for technical reasons using that same Quit dialog in Intrepid would require reimplementing it, which we don't have the resources for.

That leaves us with two unpleasant choices: the two dialogs currently used in Intrepid, or a single dialog combining all the options. I don't think it particularly matters either way, but staying with the two dialogs requires less work, and lets us use the time we'd spend merging them on fixing other problems.

As user I would suggest to take out button right top corner. All available options are under "System" and user switching is done using user applet. Seems to make sense for me.
