Bug Description

The birthday reminder is a little too long in french locale to fit in
the clock applet, and thus it is impossible to know whose birthday it
is without launching evolution. This is just a minor problem (since I
generally know whose birthday it is).

A screenshot of the calendar applet

This screenshot should explain the problem more clearly that I have done.
As you can see from it, it is pretty hard to see whose birthday it is :)

yes, bug confirmed, but I'm not sure if that's an evolution problem. Perhaps
the clock applet should rotate the text when it doesn't fit in the width ...

Vincent, an opinion on this perhaps for the panel part ?

What do you mean when you say "rotate" ? One solution would be to add a tooltip
with the full text. The other solution is obviously to change the translation
"Toute la journée" or to use an icon instead of the text... (What about a cake
icon? :-))

It would help if this bug report included steps to reproduce the problem. After adding someone with birthday today, they don't show up in the calendar applet for me.

Judging by the screenshot, though, the obvious solution is to rearrange the text so that the variable text comes first.

This doesn't really have anything to do with birthdays. Sometimes, you're able to rearrange the subject somewhat and make the variable part the beginning instead of the end. But certainly not always.

Does this occur in Lucid?

In Lucid, birthdays are cropped when the names are too long and also seem to widen the clock applet, which causes parts of it to go outside of the screen when the clock applet is in the default location on the panel.

In Maverick, birthdays doesn't seem to be displayed in the clock applet at all, which is a bad thing, imho.

In both Lucid and Maverick, appointments and tasks are limited to 21 characters when displayed in bold and 26 in plain. We really do need tooltips, or some other way of providing a quick preview of a task or appointment.

As this wasn't fixed in Maverick, what will happen with this? In Natty, as far as I know, we will have the new Date and Time indicator.

In Natty using gnome I no longer have any tasks or appointments show up when I click on the clock applet. Totally sucks. When you double click on a date in the clock applet calendar it also opens up evolution on the wrong date. One day earlier than the day you double clicked on.
