Bug Description

"Firefox is a redesign of the Mozilla browser component, similar to Galeon, K-Meleon and Camino, but written using the XUL user interface language and designed to be lightweight and cross-platform.

This browser was previously known as Firebird and Phoenix."

This description is very out of date.
* Firefox is not "a redesign of the Mozilla browser component", it is a Web browser produced by Mozilla. This sentence was apparently written before 2003, back in the days when "Mozilla" meant "the Mozilla suite".
* Using Galeon or K-Meleon as examples to explain what Firefox is no longer makes sense, since (with all due respect to their developers and users) few people have ever heard of Galeon or K-Meleon, and of those who have, approximately zero of them won't already know what Firefox is too.
* "Written using the XUL interface language" is (at least in theory) an irrelevant implementation detail.
* "Lightweight" is accurate only in comparison with the Mozilla suite, which again, was relevant only before 2003.

Suggested replacement:
"Firefox is the famous Web browser from Mozilla, featuring support for Web feeds, a built-in popup blocker, and advanced tabbed browsing."

(Removed those points that resulted from my unfamiliarity with Debian package description formatting. Reported bug 88803 about displaying them better in Launchpad.)

What about something simple but effective, like (mainly from the Mozilla site, bit marketing-lingo....):

"The award-winning Web browser is now faster, more secure, and fully customizable. With Firefox 2, new powerful features have been added, among others: Web feeds, in line spell checking, integrated search capabilities, identity theft protection, and advanced tabbed browsing."

I have taken the liberty to modify the control and changelog files myself. This was mostly an exercise to make me familiar with the packaging system.

I changed the short description and long description in 'control' as follows:

short description

The award-winning Web browser from Mozilla

long description

Firefox 2 is now faster, more secure, and fully customizable.
New powerful features have been added, among others:
Web feeds, in line spell checking, integrated search capabilities,
identity theft protection, and advanced tabbed browsing.

The 'changelog' was changed with the following addition (using dch -i):

firefox (2.0.0.2+1-0ubuntu2) feisty; urgency=low

  * package description updated (Closes: LP#88232)

 -- Cesare Tirabassi <email address hidden> Fri, 9 Mar 2007 09:08:04+0100

I then rebuild the source package and checked that the executable build is ok.

I attach the diff to this comment.

i don't think that things like Award-Winning and "faster, more securye..." belong to an objective package description. If you have other suggestions feel free to drop them in this bug.

Im happy with the description in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/88232/comments/7

I would change
short description

Firefox 2, the Mozilla web-browser.
to something less general since it implies that its the "only" mozilla browser

"This is a build of a random development version (aka trunk). It is ment for preview
and not for production use."

This shouldn't be in the description, but neither should any advertisements like the above.

Alkexander im guessing you forgot to use bug number in changelog? This bug is fixed see the following.

" Description: safe and easy web browser from Mozilla
Firefox delivers safe, easy web browsing. A familiar user interface,
enhanced security features including protection from online identity theft,
and integrated search let you get the most out of the web.
 .
Install this firefox package too, if you want to be automatically upgraded to
new major firefox versions in the future. "

Thats from apt-cache show firefox-3.0
if this is still seen in firefox 2 it will not be fixed since support is unning out on it and this is not an important bug for firefox 2. closed bug.
