Bug Description

1)
$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release: 8.10

3) A login window.

4) Nothing. I need to reboot manualy and select recovery version via grub. Then I selected the first option of the recovery menu ('resue' I think). After a few seconds, the system loading is done, hte screen turns black (like when it loads the login window, but without a 'waiting' mouse). Then a error window appears telling me that the X serveur doesn't load successfully.

The log is (only the part with errors) :
(II) loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so
(II) module dri : vendor="X.Org Foundation"
    compiled for 7.10, module=1.0.0
ABI class:X.Org Serverur Extension, version 0.3
(EE) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1)
(II) UnloadedModule:"dri"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so
(EE) Failed to load module "dri" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
(==) Matched ati for the autoconfigured driver
(==) Assiged te driver to the xf86ConfigLayout
(II) LoadModule:"ati"

I tried with the default xorg.conf and a "more complet one". Same resutls.

For information I've a ati radeon 9550.

I have exactly the same problem,

I also tried the fglrx and vesa drivers and it does the same.

So perhaps it doesn't concern xserver-xorg-video-ati but a more generic package.

I've a ATI X600.

You've messed up your systems. Fglrx does not support xserver 1.5. You need to purge it.

I cannot try fglrx : he cannot find the driver (the packet couldn't be installed because missing some packets). With the vesa driver the screens come but with the wrong resolution (no 1440x900 yet, ok).

I try purge but nothing changed.

did you install the ati driver from somewhere else? What does 'apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-ati' output?

and also 'apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-core'

seems like you did an upgrade from 7.10 to 8.10 is that correct? It's not supported, you should have gone via 8.04.

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 a month ago, and one week ago I used 'update-manager -d' to get the alpha.

But why is this a duplicate of #247376 ?

To me this seems to be a wrong version of x11-common installed. I don't see fglrx errors in the X logs, only libdri version problems.. But maybe I'm wrong..

This doesn't look like a duplicate of #247376. None of you are using fglrx right?

It's a matter of having fglrx installed. That's what causes this, fglrx
provides it's own libdri that's an older ABI.
