Bug Description

Binary package hint: fast-user-switch-applet

A few days ago the icons on my fast user switch applet changed to a little square thing - picture attached.

I can find the images in /usr/share/fast-user-switch-applet/icons/hicolor and they all look fine.

I am using version 2.24.0-0ubuntu6.1 of FUSA on Intrepid.

It looks like the icons are fine until I open pidgin. As soon as I do, the icons in FUSA break.

@Daniele

Are you talking about icons like on the screenshot attached?

If so, then you have likely enabled my ppa in your sources.list (the one with the updated libcanberra) and your problem is not related to this report. I had provided a patched version of fast-user-switch-applet for personal use which had icons enabled but I did not yet upload another version. If you want these icons back, please contact me and I'll upload an updated version (though I think then the issue with the status-icons will affect you, I do not use them, so I did not test them yet).

Yeah you're right, I enabled your ppa and I was talking about these icons!
However I disabled you ppa, uninstalled and reinstalled all the packets and the icons are still missing.
FUSA is now installed from the proposed repo.

Are there supposed to be icons next to the Shut down, Restart, options? There are icons in the System menu for these.

I also noted that sometimes also in the Intrepid Live CD there are no icons in FUSA menu

Uhm, I'm not really sure what to say here. We're using all GTK+ standard icon loading functions, so it should be really the same as everything else for the status icons...

Maybe you could run "strace" on the applet and see if they're getting read? I'm really at a loss for ideas on what this could be.

I have a similar problem with Jaunty. I played around on my netbook with the "switch-desktop" tool and switched from netbook-launcher to normal desktop, activated compiz, played around, deactivated compiz and went back to the netbook-launcher. From there on, FUSA only shows a vertical 1px bar instead of a button. I already reinstalled it, purged it, removed the applet-info from ~/.gnome but without any success.

Interestingly, switching to the "normal desktop" brings back to FUSA icon ... switching to netbook-remix shows the vertical bar...

UPDATE: I now found out why FUSA only displayed as a 1px vertical bar: the "desktop-switch" tool somehow set desktop/gnome/lockdown/disable_user_switching to TRUE which caused FUSA to this behavior. Since it is also used to set the current Pidgin state and to Logoff, I guess this is not the desired behavior...
