I have a directory -  colin/home/evolution bkup

I have tried restoring the backup file from the previous version of evolution (Ubuntu 9.04)  plus I have also tried to restore from a backup made in evolution 2.28 and I get the same message from both.

Do you get the issue if you use a directory without a space?

When I tried to restore my settings from a directory with spaces in it, it gave me the "Please Select Valid Backup File to Restore" error, but when I moved it to a directory without spaces it worked. Nonetheless not being able to backup from a directory with spaces in it seems like it should still be identified as a bug (it is certainly not obvious to an end user). Should a different bug report be made for this deficiency?

I copied my backup to the desktop and it restored from there ok.
Earlier version used to restore ok from directory with space in name.

I had the same problem after doing a fresh install of 9.10 and it scared the **** out of me. Thankfully it worked fine after I copied it to the desktop . This needs to get fixed fast.

Same here copied it to the desktop and it worked fine. Maybe we should all learn a lesson and stop using capitals and spaces on our file systems like the old days.

could you please tell us the exact names of those files? thanks.

I stored my backup file in:

/media/disk/Ubuntu Backup/Mail/evolution-backup.tar.gz

The space in the Ubuntu Backup folder being the initial problem.

Hm. I'm sorry for you. Can you please give us the output of
/usr/lib/evolution/2.28/evolution-backup --check
/home/markus/Desktop/evolution_backup.tar.gz

as well as "file /home/markus/Desktop/evolution_backup.tar.gz"?

Thanks in advance.

Remarkable. In the 21st century a backup would be located anywhere - mine is on a backup drive and I, too had the heck scared out of me. All is forgiven though, because this help is always just a click away. Much better than Microsoft. Thank You! Thank You ALL, infinitely! Good Deeds Do NOT Go Unrewarded (Moving the back-up to the desktop worked & it worked exceeding quick for a 25GB file) - Frank, Running Evolution 2.28, March 31, 2010
