Thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better.

Do you have the 'tnef-attachment' plugin enabled (Edit/Plugins)?

If you do not see it, then you need to install the evolution-plugins-experimental' package. You can do it, for example, by opening a terminal and:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install evolution-plugins-experimental

After installing the package, close & restart Evolution, then go back into Edit/Plugins, and make sure tnef-attachment is enabled. You then should be able to decipher the infamous winmail.dat.

Thanks.
I have installed experimental plugins but unfortunately evolution STILL does not recognises winmail.dat as something else.
Though, I see along plugins TNEF reader.

Any ideas what is next?
Regards!

You *did* enable the tnef-attachment extension, right?

Another thing might be going on: check if you have libytnef0 installed. For example, on a terminal, type 'dpkg -l libytnef\*'. You should see something like:

hggdh@xango2:~/.evolution $ dpkg -l libytnef\*
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Cfg-files/Unpacked/Failed-cfg/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version Description
+++-===========================-===========================-======================================================================
un libytnef-dev <none> (no description available)
ii libytnef0 1.5-1 improved decoder for application/ms-tnef attachments
ii libytnef0-dev 1.5-1 improved decoder for application/ms-tnef attachments
hggdh@xango2:~/.evolution $

libytnef0 has status 'ii', this is good. If you see it with *any* other status, then, from the terminal, issue:

sudo apt-get install libytnef0

then bounce Evolution again. You should now be all set.

libytnef0 was installed with ytnef the same time by Synaptic, I just checked all that stuff in one time.
So when I written all that stuff was installed and Evolution did nothing about winmail.dat.

Any other ideas?

John, what is your version of evolution? Please use, on a terminal, "dpkg -l evolution\*", and paste the output here.

John, please also repeat the dpkg command I gave previously. Notice that the command ends with a backslash-asterisk:

dpkg -l evolution\*

and please paste *all* output here.

John, you are showing a mix of Evo package levels: Evolution and evolution-plugin-experimental are at 2.22.3.1, Evolution-data-server, Evolutin-exchange, and evolution-plugin are at 2.22.1, and evolution-webcal is at 2.21.92...

Your problems are probably because of that mix. I frankly have no idea how this could happen, so I will not waste time trying to explain it.

Please:
1. upgrade *ALL* evolution packages to the current level
2. then quit Evolution;
3. on a console, issue 'evolution --force-shutdown'
4. restart Evolution;
5. make sure the TNEF attachments plugin is enable; if it is not, enable it & restart Evolution;
6. try again.

Sorry for the delay.

I can not do it because I checked :
evolution-webcal is 2.21.92-0ubuntu1 only.

evolution and
evolution-data-server are 2.22.1-0ubuntu3.

evolution-data-server and
evolution-data-server-common are 2.22.1-0ubuntu2 only.

evolution-exchange 2.22.1-0ubuntu1
evolution-plugins 2.22.1-0ubuntu3
evolution-plugins-experimental 2.22.1-0ubuntu3

If I do upgrade - again - I get not the same version :
version 2.22.3.1-0ubuntu1
evolution
evolution-common
evolution-data-server
evolution-data-server-common
evolution-plugins
evolution-plugins-experimental

version 2.22.3.1-0ubuntu2
evolution-exchange

evolution-webcal only older version is available

So it's impossible to get the same level for all evolution packages or I can to install to default version?

Does this mean you were able to upgrade all (except for evolution-webcal) to 2.232.3*? If so, this should do the trick.

I have the same problem.

After installing 'evolution-plugins-experimental', ensuring 'tnef-attachment' is enabled, and restarting machine, "winmail.dat" attachments are not recognised.

I have updated all packages via 'apt-get upgrade'. dpkg -l evolution\* yields:
