Thanks for your report, Does it happens with every pdf you're trying to print? the same happens if you print it to a postscript or pdf file? If only happen with one pdf can you attach that file to the report? thanks.

Hi

Yes it happens with every PDF. When I print to a PDF file I receive the
following error when opening the file: "The filename "output.pdf"
indicates that this file is of type "PDF document". The contents of the
file indicate that the file is of type "plain text document". If you open
this file, the file might present a security risk to your system."When I
print to a PS it says 'unable to open document'.

Thanks.

I get the same error when trying to print from any PDF document. Printing fails no matter where I am printing to, and the 'Unhandled MIME type: "text/plain"' message is displayed when trying to print preview.

Could you attach an example to the bug? What sort of printer do you use? Do you get the issue using other applications?

Confirmed by me with an EPSON Stylus D88 and the attached document. Happens to other pdfs also.

I got this error when trying to print a null selection.

Example:

Print
General - Range: 1 (page 1)
Page Setup - Only print: Even pages

Print preview will give the error reported.
This is, in my opinion, a very unhelpful error message. Because I didn't realize I had "even pages" selected, I spent some time trying to understand why the print preview would not work.

I suggest warning the user of the impossible print selection, or that it produces a "null" print.

exactly same for me

printing a test page is ok, printing in openoffice is ok

when i try to print from evince absolutely nothing happens and when i try to print preview i have: Unhandled MIME type: “text/plain”

I have tryed uninstalling and reinstalling evince but it did not fix the problem. it does it with any pdf.

printer: canon bjc-4400 parrallel

printing installed manually with command:
sudo apt-get install cupsys gnome-cups-manager cups-pdf cupsys-driver-gutenprint

evince installed manually with command:
sudo apt-get install evince

I can not test the ps thing because i dont really know what it is

I have the same problem (on Ubuntu 7.10, Brother MFC-240C).

When I run evince as a normal user it gives the error, HOWEVER if I run it as root and open the file from there and print, everything works out normally. I guess it's a permissions problem (at least on my computer), then?

I did try to print when starting evince as root but a no more success that way.

this is the messages that where in the console after an attempt to print.:

Strangely, I was able to print page 9 of 20 of my VerizonWireless statement, but printing page 5 produced no results: no printing, no error, nothing in the printer queue. Print preview gave the error: Unable to open document / Unhandled MIME type: “text/plain”. Closing Evince and opening an old Verizon statement from 2005 worked: I get a print preview without an error. And yet the more recent ones still give the error.
The attached pdf is the one that started the problem, and now won't print. I'll try to send another comment with a file that doesn't give the error.

This is the older pdf that doesn't give the error.

i have just retry maybe a month later and it is working perfectly now.... I think it might be related to page selected for printing that might be incoherent, and the error about it not helpfull.

The hint to the similar bug report was quite helpful. Thank you for that! Indeed it is the error message which is quite confusing. After correcting the page rank I could print my document without any problems.
Please correct the error message, e.g. by adding "Please check the page rank you've selected.".

I don't know if the following fix would work for everyone, but in my case the files (some or all) under /usr/share/mime were only readable by the root user. Fixing the permissions :-

sudo find /usr/share/mime -type f -exec chmod a+r {} \;

gives me a working evince.

Tried Mike Meredith suggestion for permissions - didn't work for me. Still stuck on this issue. My exact problem is posted at:
  https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+question/39356

Its the Fidelity site that may be the problem. Note files there are handled by Javascript. Only Ubuntu users have the problem, and since Fidelity doesn't support, there's no help forthcoming from them. For those of this stuck on this problem, its rather tragic. We investors on Fidelity really, really need those reports. I expect most of us are not technical enough to know what to do. Thanks if you can help.

I had a similar problem in that nothing would open at all with evince (always said "Unhandled MIME type: application/[insert-MIME-type-here]"). I "fixed" it by reinstalling the package shared-mime-info. I'm sure this isn't the best way to fix it and not even a real fix at all, but anyone happen to know why this worked?

Not necessarily not a bug, just maybe not one for evince, although I'm not sure why evince is looking in ~/.local/share/mime/mime.cache to read pdf files...
