Do you mean block people that are in your contact list or not included? because there is already a requirement for that issue at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=551911, Thanks!

Hello Kamus:

Thanks for your quick response. Really, both are needed. I mean,
blocking people not in your contact list is useful for spam messages,
and blocking people in your contact list can keep you focused on your
job when a client is bored. It's a pity that really such a nice app and
so well integrated to the desktop lack's that kind of features!

Absolutely yours.

Ivan

At times when you're busy working, it is imperative to block certain contacts who would want to open up a conversation with you every time they see you online.

Keeping this incomplete for now as upstream bug was I think mistakenly marked duplicate. Will change status here once the upstream bug is unduplicated.

PLEASE ADD A BLOCK FEATURE!!!
Why don't you do it today??!!
isn't it seems to be necessary?! to have a right to block a spam?!

Samic, this is the upstream bug https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=616811. This bug is still marked as duplicate of bug 551911 which is a different bug.

You can register and post a comment if it brings something technical or interesting. I would rather avoid the "me too" comment or "do it today" attitude.

edit: bug 551911 is a bugzilla bug report. Do not follow the second link of my post above, or it will open a launchpad bug with the same ref. number. my bad.

Personally, I've stopped using empathy for lacking this feature and a few others that would not be appropriate to mention on this bug. This bug should be moved to a high importance status considering that people online can be abusive, annoying, stalk you, etc. Not to mention spam.

I read that the reason this feature does not exist is because of the "available to all" philosophy. How much truth I do not know. If that is true and is what is keeping this feature from being added, please leave your home unlocked at night. Might as well bring it full circle.

I don't use empathy for exact this reason. In my opinion it is more a requirement for a messaging client then a feature. I would love to see the ability to block contacts added to empathy too. Personally I never understood why Ubuntu switched to empathy as default messenger-client which is, according to my view, an incomplete app.

the upstream bug does not actually talk about this specific issue but it involves the whole block-a-contact thing so marking this as triaged.

This constitutes a feature requests and is thus outwith the definition of a papercut.

This is more than a simple feature request. This represents a lack of basic functionality. This is the default IM client in Ubuntu and the only way to block spammers is to replace it. MEGA FAIL!
