I got the same issue when attempting to switch from "Normal" to "Extra" in the appearance settings.

I installed now the new nvidia driver.169.07 from nvidia.com on my thinkpad t61
and unistalled nvidia-glx:

now compiz works fine. For me its ok. sorry for using your time.

til version 1:0.6.99+git20080102-0ubuntu3 also the switch from "normal" to "Extra" works fine!
