Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-ati

I couldn't ever get to the desktop on the LiveCD with gutsy BETA - gnome would try to login, crash, retry, crash, etc.
Finally, I tried a failsafe X session, that worked, so I tried a failsafe gnome session, and that worked. I installed onto the harddrive, then observed the same behavior after rebooting off the HD. I had to choose gnome-failsafe for the session type before I could login.

Figuring that it was a problem with the ati driver, I used the restricted driver manager to install fglrx, and after I rebooted, I was able to login with the normal full gnome session - no problem. Just thought I'd report this, as the behavior on the live CD will definitely confuse novice users - as they probably won't know to go and choose failsafe session.

I can confirm this. I have the same graphics card (ATI Radeon Xpress 1100) in my Laptop. After loging in, it takes some seconds, the panels appear, and then the session terminates and I'm back in GDM. The auto-login routine from the Desktop CD logs back in, and so forth.

Can you please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log from the crash (it will be renamed to /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old when the X server starts again)? Also .xsession-errors might be interesting.

Here are the files you requested (I had to go into restricted drivers and turn fglrx off of course to get them). I noticed there was a new version of the ATI driver in this mornings updates - which doesn't appear to fix the problem.

As the log says "Direct rendering experimental on RS400/Xpress 200 enabled". Try disabling DRI with this in the Device section of xorg.conf:
 Option "DRI" "off"

Try also to disable desktop effects (compiz). Maybe compiz needs to be blacklisted on these cards.

Adding Option "DRI" "off" seems to have fixed it. Let me know if I can do anything else to help.

compiz should probably be disabled on these cards.
