Bug Description

Binary package hint: bootchart

ubuntu = 7.10 (gutsy)
package = bootchart 0.9-0ubuntu7
related "bug" = 204186

/etc/init.d/stop-bootchart uses rsvg (rsvg-convert) to convert the generated SVG file into a PNG image. Usually this is fairly transparent.

However, when fsck runs at boot, the resulting SVG apparently has a lot of information, because it takes a very long time for rsvg-convert to finish, and the resulting PNG image has a much larger filesize than usual.

During the conversion process, rsvg-convert takes up >90% cpu and ram, turning the whole machine to sludge.

If svg conversion is not removed (as proposed in 204186), then this should be addressed.

I've got the same problem on Ubuntu 8.04

Just happened to me as well... luckily I have dual core CPU so the buggy software didn't freeze my computer for 10min straight.

I just got hit by this. Between trackerd and rsvg-convert my dual core processor with 2GB of ram was rendered useless for over 10 minutes. It took me that long just to figure out wtf was going on. I had to reboot since rsvg-convert was un-interruptible.

I have / on one partition and /home on another if that matters. The /home partition contains 188GB of data.

The importance for this issue should certainly be decided soon. How about critical?

Same experience for me - rsvg-convert absorbs all available memory and CPU if running after an fsck at boot time...

Confirmed, but not exactly high priority - if you don't want a bootchart generated, don't install bootchart?

hit with this some days ago with hardy. rsvg-convert took about 75% of cpu (core2duo) and 4.3G of memory!

Recently, after re-booting, I had to struggle to gain control of my computer as rsvg-convert was taking all the memory and cpu cycles, making it impossible to do anything.

I have now uninstalled bootchart, now that I know that the problem is caused by it.

A most annoying problem and one that I would consider more than just 'low' importance. More like a show-stopper!

w.r.t bootchart (and rsvg-convert), I agree this is a critical bug...

Confirmed on Ubuntu 8.10 64. I vote for a low priority(I use conky on gnome, and cpu applet on KDE so i had no problem with figuring out what is happening) because it optional package. What about turning off(by default) bootchart when fsck is planned? Probably most people don't want 18600x9389 image of sleep,exe,sleep,exe,sleep,exe,sleep,exe,sleep,exe,sleep,exe....
