Bug Description

Binary package hint: beryl-core

Package is either beryl-core or beryl-manager
Beryl:
If I open multiple windows of any application under any user on any desktop or multiple at once, they open black. This is dependent on many things, I guess you could say, it literally depends on the "area" used by the cumulative total of windows I have open. The more open, the more likely I am to have the issue and it is very reproducible. When a window shows up black, I can reduce the area of the window horizontally, vertically, or both to eliminate the problem. The more windows I have open, the smaller I have to make subsequent windows. It seems to be independent of having windows on multiple desktops or having transparency effects and so on applied. I have found a workaround for the issue, seems to be 100% so far: under Advanced Beryl Options in the right-click menu of the Beryl Manager icon in the Ubuntu gnome "systray", if I select "Copy" as the "Rendering Path" the issue is eliminated, however "wobble" and the snaky-minimize action have lower performance, I assume "Texture from Pixmap" is supposed to be higher performance. I have yet to be able to re-create the issue while using Copy instead of Pixmap. I know I'm not the only one to have this issue, I hope this helps as a workaround and for finding the root cause!

Other technical notes:
 - I am using x86 under an AMD64 for compatibility reasons
 - beryl-manager is being loaded from within my user profile under the gnome window manager as a regular startup item to initiate the software
 - I am NEW to Ubuntu on x86 coming from using Debian under SUN4U Arch., please forgive some possible technical oops on my end related to *nix, I'm used to nothing working and being given "lol" as the net reply :)
 - I am using the nVidia driver automatically downloaded by Ubuntu on 22APR07, my Ub distribution was downloaded on 20APR07 from standard-support release repositories 7.04
 - AMD 64 Venice-Core 3000+, 1GB PC3200, nForce4, GeForce 6600GT PCIX 128MB
 - I receive no error messages, just the black windows I can resize or change my settings to resolve

Thanks, wasn't sure about the detail necessary in the subj of the bug, although I shouldn't have used the word "fix" :)

I just wanted to thank you for being so articulate about the problem, where others have been skimpier on the details. I too have this problem and hope to see it's root-cause fixed. I love operating in beryl and can't stand that black boxes hamper life at times.

These black boxes are about as welcome as the blue screen of death was in Windows 98. :)

I'm operating Beryl in a KDE environment, so I don't know if your fix will work, but I intend to try it out right now! I'm actually quite excited to read it, because I'm getting sick of my AbiWord documents and Firefox windows turning black. Ugh!

Peace.

Just a quick update: I did get the black box issue to stop in KDE with the tip you gave. I started application after application and no black boxes appeared. Performance of beryl is notably suckier, but it's a small price to pay to rid myself of the blacked-out applications of death.

So it's not just gnome your tip works in. Interestingly, I was sort of able to reproduce the problem, but it wasn't quite the same. I got a white box in Firefox with, like, 5 other instances open. So I don't know what to make of that.... But the situation is vastly improved.

Thanks again for the tip.

Beryl is replaced by Compiz Fusion, so has been removed from Gutsy.
