Bug Description

Binary package hint: adept

Kubuntu 8.10.
adept 3.0~beta4ubuntu3

Adept does not list packages which come from Third Party software reporitories.
For instance, if I add kubuntu-members-kde4 personal package archive:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu intrepid main
Adept cannot list package amarok-kde4, provided by that repository, but the package is listed in Synaptic.

The same happens for Medibuntu repository:
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org intrepid free non-free
Adept cannot list package w32codecs provided by this repository, but the package is listed in Synaptic.

Due this issue, is not possible to install Third Party packages using Adept manager, it is needed to use another package manager for it.

I attach some screenshots as demo of the problem.

In my experience it does, but only after the xapian index has been rebuilt, which doesn't happen very often since that takes a bit of time. It probably should be rebuilt after modifying the sources.list through the sources editor though.

I can confirm this problem. Adept 3.0 cant show any packages from Third Party software reporitories. When I update the sources within Adept 3.0, Third Party software reporitories will be ignored too.

Through the console, I can update & install from Third Party software reporitories without any problems.

A truly disturbing problem. I hope it can be fixed quickly , if not I think many Users want to remove this Packagemanager quickly.

Similar symptoms here; Kubuntu 8.10 rc
Adept does not list Medibuntu packages after repository is added. Kubuntu 8.04 and earlier did this ok.

at begining i got no result when i search something

and after trying install adept2 (but not to the end, too much dependencies)
you can look here

and reinstall adept3 by apt-get
i can now see search result displayed
but not from third party too.....

It seems there are 2 different utilities here; Adept Installer and Adept Manager.
The Adept Installer only lists a restricted range of packages, but it is Adept Installer that is in the Kmenu. I couldn't find Adept Manager from the Kmenu, but it can be accessed if you search (using the Kmenu search field).

Adept Manager is in the System category of the menu, but that's not related to this bug.

Oh, and as a workaround for this bug running "sudo update-apt-xapian-index" will get all your ppa packages to show.

@Jonathan Thomas:
After "sudo update-apt-xapian-index" all of the packages are finally displayed. Until a fix is released, this is a good solution for me.

The same workaround works for me too. I have had the same problem on 3 different computers.

To be more precise: After the "sudo update-apt-xapian-index" I can now see all the packages when I use ADEPT MANAGER. I still cannot see them in ADEPT INSTALLER. This is rather confusing: by mistake I start the adept installer instead of the adept manager, and wonder why I cannot find packages.

Version: 3.0 beta 4 (Sheldon) using KDE 4.1.4 (using KDE 4.1.3)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

Using KDE 4.1.4 (please update bugs.kde.org - you can't select this version at the beginning!) and adept 3.0 beta 4, i did the following, on a fresh Kubuntu Intrepid with all updates, as described at
http://www.kubuntu.org/news/amarok-2.0.1.1

1. add the line
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu intrepid main
with adept to your 3rt party repos.

2. try to search for "amarok-kde4" in adept - it doesn't find it!
3. You can type "apt-get install amarok-k[tab]" and it autocompletes it at the CLI to the right package.

If I made a config error please tell me, but otherwise this is serious.

This is because the xapian index is not rebuilt after a new repo is added. As a workaround you can run sudo update-apt-xapian-index

Adept is upstream dead nowadays. It has been sucessfully replaced by alternatives like Apper and Muon.
I think anybody cares about this bug today, thereore the bug could be closed.
