Bug Description

Binary package hint: adept

~$ apt-cache policy adept
adept:
  Installed: 3.0~beta1
  Candidate: 3.0~beta1
  Version table:
 *** 3.0~beta1 0
        500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Intrepid Ibex updated 31.08.2008, ca. 23:00 CET.

Search in Adept 3 does not provide the expected results (as compared to adept 2 or synaptic).

E.g. a search for "2.6" will not show a single kernel. "kgrub" gives no result (after showing "krubeditor" very briefly), however "grub" will also show "kgrubeditor" as a result.

All "States" and "Requested" are selected, so it's no filter issue, at least none that is related to the GUI-configuration options.

Currently searching-by-packagename hasn't been implemented due to time constraints. (Feature freeze has passed, not enough time to test, etc)

And what exactly where does Adept search for keyword matches? In the package descriptions or somewhere else?

Package descriptions. And yes, it sucks. :(

I've tried beta2 and it's still the same. Is it going to be implemented for the final version of Hardy or do we have to wait for the next (April) release?

It would have to wait until Adept 3.1/Jaunty Jackalope in April next year, Adept's been in feature freeze since alpha6.

Wow! Does that mean that currently adept can not really be recommended as the default package manager currently?
That is weird.

This is actually a bug, as indicated by the original kgrubeditor example.

Yes, but the problem is that Kubuntu is going to ship with Adept 3.0 as default (and only) package manager and that even if it's corrected in Adept 3.1 before April, the people using Intrepid will have to wait for six months with a weird semi-working package management application. I'm not using Adept just because of this bug. For me it's completely useless since I can never find what I'm looking for and I use Synaptic all the time, but Kubuntu users may not be aware that Synaptic even exists. I don't think that including Adept in its actual state as default package manager is a good idea just because of this bug.

Olaf Lenz (olenz) wrote :

I completely agree with getaceres. From my point of view, this is a show-stopper for kubuntu intrepid, as the package manager is one of the first things a new user sees (or should see) after he installed the OS.

Probably it would make sense to include the predecessor of this adept version as default?

Jonathan Thomas (echidnaman) wrote :

Impossible, Adept2 relies too heavily on KDE3. Before Adept 3 in Intrepid Adept would crash on startup due to a missing KDE3 Konsole.

getaceres (getaceres) wrote :

I don't think that reverting back to Adept2 is the solution but just that this bug must have been corrected even in feature-freeze status (since is not a feature, it's a bug) just because this bug makes the whole application work in a strange way that most users would find strange. For me, it would have been better to completely remove the search functionality until it was ready than to release the application with a semi-working search feature because either way, searching in Adept3 is mostly useless. Anyway, I would have used Synaptic instead of that because I rely too much in the package's name (normally I know the package name of what I want to install or at least part of it) but with that search functionality anyone can think that a package doesn't exist just because the package manager does not find it.

Just wanted to add my support for the missing feature/bug/whatever to be implemented. Adept is quite unusable at the moment.

Is searching on package name that difficult to implement?

I'm using Adept 3.0~beta4ubuntu3 and search bug is still present. If I type "physic" in the search box Adept shows results for less than a second and then clears whole list. If I type "physical" Adept doesn't clear it. Id dunno if it's a bug, but list is clear even if all buttons in State and in Requested are selected.

Olaf Lenz (olenz) wrote :

I can confirm this behaviour. It is very confusing: When I type "physics" instead of "physic", I get a useful list as well, but "physic" gives a useful list very shortly, that disappears after a fraction of a second.
I would believe that this bug is somehow related to bug #280747, where the search term is completely empty.

Olaf Lenz (olenz) wrote :

The difference of Kraftman's problem and the original bug is, that it is not a prefix of the package name, but an arbitrary word in the package name. So apparently adept at the end only lists packages that have the same prefix as the search term, and not such packages, where the search term is somewhere else in the package name. However, during the search, it seems to have a list that contains all variants...
Strange, if you ask me.

Sokraates (sokraates) wrote :

I triaged this a bit and it seems that Adept3 searches for partial matches in package names. However, only the first word in a packae name seems to be recognized. E.g. "phy" will show phylip, "phys" will show dphys-swapfile. "paw" and "paw-d" will show paw-demos, while "demos" will not.

In the descriptions, matches are only shown for full words. E.g. "physic" will show no results, while "physics" will give you a host of them. As a further experiment, the package paw-demos is decribed as "Physics Analysis Workstation ...". So to find it from the description, one needs to search for "phsics", "analysis" or "workstation", while "phsic", "analys" or "work" will not work.

Strange behaviour.

I've also filed a wishlist bug regarding search behaviour (285050).

I get a completely different interface from Beta2 ... I don't have any menu items under View, and I have to hit enter to Browse. And I can't select Tags anymore. And searching for 'guidance' (my testcase from bug 283394) returns none of the guidance power manager results.

It seems to be more broken than before right now...

I am using the 3.0~betea4ubuntu3. I don't even get search list entries for the cases named by Sokraates, like e.g. "phys" or "paw". Further I can not find something with "firefox" even though this should be the full package name.

Concerning the commen of Nils. I thought that I have this issue as well first, however, this is not right. What you report is not a bug. There are two different interfaces. They are called "adept" and "adept installer". The first one is the real adept, und the second one is, what corresponds to the "Add/Remove Software" application of ubuntu with the gnome desktop.Confusingly "adept installer" is reached directly in the computer tab of the kde4 kickoff menu, whereas the real adet is "hidden" in Applications -> System. Alternatively you can start it by hitting Alt+F2 and typing "adept" and choosing "Adept Manager" by using the tab-key or mouse.

that's expected behaviour

you have to type 4 charachters before the search begins

I've updated this bug's description to make it clear that I filed it due to missing package name searching (though then I didn't know, package name searching was missing).

Searching by package name is included, so I consider this bug fixed. It's a totally different issue that searching in Adept 3 can (and should) still be improved.

I've reported bug #285050 on further issues with searching. Please feel free to add a comment to that bug or file a new one, if the issue has not yet been reported.

Adept is no longer included in the coming version of Kubuntu (which uses Kpackagekit instead).
Moreover Adept is no longer maintained anymore, so it's very unlikely that a fix will come for Adept in Intrepid..
You won't see this bug with Kpackagekit.

I just downloaded Kubuntu 8.10 and after a frustrating day trying to find and use an installer for the software for which I installed a Linux, came across this thread.
Thank you, I have installed Kpackage (it is not included with the 8.10 distribution), and will now see if it works.
This is supposed to be one of the most popular and polished Linuxes, no wonder people stick to the mainstream OSes.
