Ubuntu default font is too big

Here’s stock Firefox with with ascending font sizes. Notice how much more room Firefox has with 8px – practical for netbook users, no?

That screenshot does a very good job of making it look as if reducing the font size gives Firefox no more room at all.

I think you'll find the screenshot of Firefox actually shows that the window gets smaller with the same amount of content, when the font size reduces.

Have a closer look at the window borders.

Maybe changing the font to one with a better readability on small size would allow developers to consider the change.

I would suggest Dorid Sans in 9px, 8 is too small and 10 is too wide. Also drois seems to looks better on small sizes.

Totally agree on this. 8 as a size is enough. I've been wondering for years why my Ubuntu always looked such much less professional than Windows. Then I figured out it was because the font size is so huge!
I changed the size to 8px and am using Droid Sans now and since then my desktop looks a lot better.

I always change the resolution from 96 to 80 dpi. The desktop looks so much better and polished with smaller fonts.

I always change the font size for my installation.

I like the current font size, It makes no sense to have smaller fonts on current monitor sizes. On a 19" or 21" monitor there's plenty of room for applications, no need to shrink the font size.

Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old file from after reproducing this issue. If you've using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

You are young indeed. The Gnome simplicity and the default font and font size of Ubuntu are the first 'wow' factor for many. It's clear, it is readable and its appealing. You don't have to be close to the screen and to focus (especially on a small factor size display, like a notebook), and you can keep working longer, without visual discomfort. Why should we change that? For you?

I have read your blog "It’s the little things that count", looks like a personal quest for a global 10.04 GUI re-font according to one vision, spread in 16 bug reports; no thanks. There is already a design team. If you want a smaller font--for you--then it's not a bug any more, but a mere setting in your preferences

The 96 dpi is controlled by gnome. In X we're just taking the upstream defaults for font sizing.
I tend to agree with the previous poster that reducing the font size might be desirable for some, but will be seen as an undesirable regression by others.
