Bug Description
I was testing jaunty. At some point I did an upgrade and X stopped working in the following way: black screen on boot, the system clearly logging in (automatically) and then some random coloured vertical lines appeared on the screen. Hard reboot was needed.
I reinstalled hardy from the daily live of april 20th. It worked (I am now typing from the live usb). After a reboot it went back to the same symptoms again, which include keyboard locked so X is completely gone. The point is that both the live system and the installed system have the *same* version of the drivers and server, that is xserver-xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu18.

Thinking about it, it might be related to console switch, in fact my session loads "behind the black screen" and if I press the power button it reboots after 60 secs. At that point I see a garbled screen which should be the console, judging from the number of text-mode- cursor- looking blinking white lines on the screen. So the console is gone too.
