Coccinella is a free and open-source cross-platform chat client with a built-in whiteboard for improved collaboration with other people. Other key features of Coccinella include:

    * File transfer

(*) Coccinella can connect to any Jabber/XMPP instant messaging server. You can either use a public server, or you can deploy your own server. In the latter case, you can opt to federate your server with the public Jabber/XMPP network.

"The Coccinella" is one of the very, very few Jabber protocol based programs that allow encrypted internet telephony, which IMHO might make Ubuntu a factor for use in professional industry surroundings. The newest version is 0.96.8 and it is pretty new (see http://thecoccinella.org/download). Would it be legal and possible for you to package it for ubuntu 8.10?

I'm willing to work on this package, but I will need some guidnance in the process. Is that acceptable?

It is more than acceptable to require guidance when packaging an application. I would suggest joining #ubuntu-motu on irc.freenode.net. You will be able to find many MOTUs there who will be glad to answer any questions you might have. Once you start working on packaging this application, please change the Status to 'In Progress', and assign the bug to yourself. That way, nobody else will work on packaging it at the same time.

Is this actually getting worked on? I see its assigned but not entries for some months? Would you like me to take over?

Ive actually started work on packaging this up. A bit of work to move all the files into the debian/ubuntu structure.

Working on the current "stable" release 0.96.10. The next official release is March.
Have also had a look at the current dev-release 0.96.11 which has sorted out some of 0.96.10 short comings..

I've just uploaded packages for 0.96.16 to my PPA ( https://launchpad.net/~miry/+archive/ppa ). A manpage is still missing.
