Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

1.) Using Hardy Heron latest build on PowerPC (PowerMac G4 Dual)

2.) maybe it depends on gdm.

3.) Current version here: 2.20.4-0ubuntu1

4.) When I hit CTRL+ALT+F1 - F6, I expect to get access to a virtual terminal with a comand prompt or a login prompt.

5.) When I hit these buttons here, I can see only a blinking cursor. Its moving anyhow when I press keys, but there is no ASCII on the screen. Nothing exept the blinking cursor. I can get back to tty 7 ? the graphic-Terminal with the login screen or the xserver-session but cant access the command-line without gui-login

I can confirm this behaviour with the hardy 20080317 desktop cd for ppc.

Same problem here on a powerbook g4.

Actually you can login. But it seems that the font/text is 'invisible.'

Try blindly logging in. Type in your user name and return. Type in password and return. You should see the cursor move down several lines as you login.

Once the cursor stops moving you should be logged in. Now if you enter the command 'setupcon' and enter you should see now see the text and use the console.

However, each time you switch VT's you need to reenter 'setupcon'

OK, this workaround does it also for me.

Seems to be really only a problem of the colors. Text and background colors are the same.
May be this issue is related with this one https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/203206. I've got a similar problem of missing text/fonts when booting in single-user mode.

I can confirm this for Notebook with Intel-arch (Acer TravelMate 660, Centrino) here also.
So it not depends/is limited to ppc.

in some cases having a virtual terminal is essential, so i think this can count as "Has a severe impact on a small portion of Ubuntu users (estimated)".

could you uninstall gdm and try if that's still an issue? doesn't seem to be a gdm issue

removing gdm and restarting, i still get a blank virtual terminal. had to use the setupcon trick to get gdm back.

If the problem doesn't depend on gdm maybe its related to this one. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/203206: In single-user mode I have a similar issue. The screen looks like on a error/alert message but there is only coloured background and no text on it. But I've no idea how to figure out, which package is related to this bug.

Problem remains with the new kernel 2.6.24-14-powerpc-smp. Still dont know hoe to figure put on wich package it depends. Or is it kernel-related. Single-user mode also remains broken.

Bug #201591 is similar and was assigned to the kernel, so i am going to follow that example

I think it was the similar issue as in the report linked by sam tygier. It is also fixed here since the update.
