Bug Description

I have the same thing since the latest Hardy updates. Compiz was working fine until then.

system specs:
1 223-0533 XPS 410n, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6320 (1.86GHz,1066FSB) with 4MB cache
1 311-5121 2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
1 Microsoft 4000 natural keyboard
1 320-5338 19 in (19 in viewable)SP1908FPSilver, Flat Panel Display
1 320-4944 NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE
1 341-3257 250GB SATA II Hard Drive (7200RPM)
1 341-3865 No Floppy Drive Requested
1 420-7143 Ubuntu Desktop Edition version7.04
1 Logitech Revolution mouse
1 313-3607 No modem requested for Dell Dimension
1 313-4422 16X DVD+R/RW CD-RW Combination Drive
1 313-2758 Integrated Audio
1 313-4062 AS501 10W Flat Panel Stereo Speakers for 1704, 1905,2001FPFlat Panels

I have added a 500gig drive that has Gutsy on it at the moment

There is some chatter over on the forum about this exact issue. It looks like it might have been a kernel update that caused the issue. Can we confirm kernel update in Alpha 4? If, so, can the triage team assign the package to kernel?

On my IBM Thinkpad T40p, I cannot enable desktop effects since my upgrade to hardy beta :
 lspci
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000] (rev 02)

 glxinfo |grep rendering
direct rendering: Yes

Hello there,
so, I have the same problem with my Thinkpad T41.
ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 with 32MB
Before with Compiz everything was working fine.

Running the following command may solve your problem (now compiz works for me):
echo SKIP_CHECKS="yes" >> ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager

After running the command posted by mderakhs, you might need to restart X or (in my case) the entire machine before it starts working.

I think it should also be known that I have never had any problems running compiz on the laptop in Gusty, so I'm not sure why it got blacklisted.

This comment worked for my Thinkpad T41 and T40 with a ATI Radeon 7500

mkdir -p ~/.config/compiz/ && echo SKIP_CHECKS=yes >> ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager

just paste it in the Terminal and everything works!
