Bug Description

X locks/crash up when using the "ati" opensource driver version 1.6.7.195-1ubuntu2 with my desktop. The screen is black, and it does not respond to mouse or keyboard input on system startup.

Booting in recovery mode I tried several options in xorg.conf but all tempts just stopped after the xinit command with the black screen.

Following recommendations in the XorgOnTheEdge I downgraded to driver 1:6.6.193-1ubuntu1 and everything is running without problems including Compiz with desktop effects enabled.

I just want to know if I have to stick with driver 1:6.6.193-1ubuntu1 or should I need to upgrade to the new driver as insistently indicated by the icon on the top of the screen (the update-manager applet).

Note1: The ATI opensource driver 1.6.7.195-1ubuntu2 was working very well on my system before the release of kernel 2.6.22.14 version.
Note2: Sound system was affected by this upgrade too.

I can provide more log files if necessary but I don't know how to create debugging files.

What these options can do in the Xorg.conf ? Do they help anything ?

Option "LVDSBiosNativeMode" "FALSE"

Option "BusType" "PCI"

Have installed driver *

      xserver-xorg-video-ati-dbg_6.7.195+git20071020tv

Boot normal, Compiz running without problems, Desktop effects enabled. Ok

Hope it keeps stable.

So does the 6.7.195+git20071020tv version solve your issue?

Yes, driver 6.7.195+git20071020tv solved problem with dark screen on start-up.

I have tried option BusType PCI doesn't work with my card, system hangs, Firefox scroll slowly, have a bad V_BIOS checksum on start-up, gnome session takes a long time to initialize and once it wasn't possible to detect video card and displayconfig-gtk did a mess with xorg.conf.

The other issues are maybe not directly related, so please file new bug reports for those.
