Bug Description

The content that used to live at:

  http://www.ubuntu.com/employment

moved to:

  http://webapps.ubuntu.com/employment

Please make the redirect point there, rather than just at the Ubuntu frontpage, which is a bit useless.

Now:

  http://www.ubuntu.com/employment/

has been redirected to:

  http://www.canonical.com/about-canonical/careers

which is Canonical centric. For a long time there has been some pride in pointing out that the _Ubuntu_ jobs page was cross-company and did not solely advertise Canonical-related jobs.

The usurping of an existing widely-spread URL has broken this resource of incoming links by redirecting the URL to /something/ else. Ideally the link should should redirect to the existing content, which now lives at:

  http://webapps.ubuntu.com/employment

Hi, the decision for now is to keep it focused on Canonical jobs. I'm not saying it won't change but this is how it is for the time being.

I think Ubuntu-related jobs at Canonical should be rendered, and
automatically included in www.ubuntu.com/employment by some regular
automated script. In addition, third party companies should be able to
advertise jobs there.

So the effect would be:

www.ubuntu.com/employment

  Canonical Job Title
  description..... link

  Canonical Job Title
  description..... link

  Canonical Job Title
  description..... link

  IBM Job Title
  description.... link

  Dell Job Title
  description.... link

And separately, at www.canonical.com/employment:

  Canonical Job Title
  etc

Canonical jobs /have/ always been rendered in the Ubuntu Jobs page, in addition to the (slim number of) jobs advertised from others (eg. Oxford Archeology). This is the Ubuntu Jobs page content that got shuffled off to the following webapps URL (and on which the Canonical jobs are /still/ listed):

  http://webapps.ubuntu.com/employment/

Specifically when the content was shuffled off; (1) initially no redirect was put in place, (2) later, after this bug was filed, a redirect was added, but pointing /off-site/ to canonical.com and the Canonical-exclusive jobs listing.

Assuming I understood the intent of the following correctly (eg. "<sabdfl> ubuntu.com/employment should be open to jobs unrelated to canonical, but relevant to ubuntu"):

  http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2010/08/17/%23ubuntu-meeting.html#t12:06

then the current redirect appears to be incompatible with that desire and the suggested ideals of encouraging wider corporate outreach/engagement within the Ubuntu eco-sphere.

It would also be nice to list the ubuntu-jobs mailing list (https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-jobs/) as Ubuntu-related jobs are advertised there, no matter if they're at Canonical or not.

There is a new jobs database at Canonical called Taleo, and we use an rss feed to populate a right-hand-side module with the latest jobs (at http://www.canonical.com/about-canonical/careers)

The idea is to add this module to the Canonical and Ubuntu page on Ubuntu.com (http://www.ubuntu.com/project/canonical-and-ubuntu) and indicate that these would be roles at Canonical. We will then re-direct the old URL to come here (http://webapps.ubuntu.com/employment/) Richard Lee is working on this now.

Because this is an automated feed, I don't think we can include jobs from outside Canonical on the module.

We could create a separate page or area dedicated to jobs if that's required, but from a conversation I had with Matt Nuzum I understand there were just a handful of these jobs in the last 4 years... We'd need to identify the target audience for this page and the sources, amount of content and update mechanisms - so we can design it accordingly.

Canonical jobs which are not for Ubuntu should not appear on the Ubuntu website.

Agreed - and Ubuntu jobs which are not from Canonical *should* appear there.

Hum, I'm not quite sure the rest of the discussion has been addressed in this solution.

AFAICT the idea was to have Ubuntu-related jobs (no matter if they were at Canonical or not) listed at ubuntu.com/employment

Maybe separate bugs should be filed for this.
