Bug Description

au.archive.ubuntu.com is useless.
This is the default mirror provided in sources.list for australian users.
I just tried an install and the "scanning mirrors" took many, many minutes, due to failing to connect to this mirror [I have a fast cable connection to the net].

This mirror has to be either fixed, or pointed to a much better mirror.

I am from germany and for me this mirror works fine as tested right now. It's also up to date.

It appears this problem is somewhat intermittent.
The above mirror was also working ok for me earlier today, but again is having problems.

I did a fresh install a few days ago.
The bit of the install that gets info from sources.list took over 10 minutes, didn't load anything at commented out lines with au.archive.ubuntu.com

I agree, this mirror is useless.

I would personally love to see a manual option for selecting your mirror, because in AU, lots of ISP do mirroring which is not counted in traffic usage. I wouldn't mind so much, but the Optus mirror takes a ridiculously long time to do anything. It's even useless as a sourceforge mirror too. I keep having to select Taiwan or Japan.

Can we have au.archive.ubuntu.com point to another mirror? Maybe AARNet, Pacific or even the Uni of WA?

I also agree. Connecting from Perth, it's been failing consistently since my latest install; at least five days, at every time of the day, on four separate machines on two different connections connecting to different exchanges. Even connecting to the AARNet front-end (http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/) times out. Any suggestions?

au.archive.ubuntu.com is currently pointing to AARNet

mark@net:~$ dig au.archive.ubuntu.com +short
mirror.aarnet.edu.au.

http://www.prevented.net/nagios3/ (guest/guest) doesn't show a lot of errors or timeouts in monitoring.

Also, a wget in .nl looks quite good:
mark@maximus:~$ wget -O /dev/null http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/d/darkice/darkice_0.20.1.orig.tar.gz

This bug doesn't apply to the Ubuntu website, and it seems like the mirror is okay now so closing it. Thanks
