Bug Description

Binary package hint: kde-l10n-es

I'm using kubuntu 9.04,

After a fresh install of the system, choosing basque (euskera, eu), as the main language some of the menu and system settings words appear on cyrillic characters.

I has happen to me in 4 individual installations, 3 i386 and another one amd64.

hi,
I don't think the wrong package is kde-l10n-es, I selected it the
first time without wanting to, I found that bug and when I added mine
I was in that bug page and it was selected by default. If some package
could be wrong it would be kde-l10n-eu

As reported in a Basque FLOSS association (http://librezale.org/foroa/viewtopic.php?pid=6566#p6566, in Basque), the problem is an error made by Zlatko Popov in Launchpad for the Bulgarian version of KDE (it seems that also affects to the Icelandic locale):

https://translations.launchpad.net/~zlatkopopov

if you check https://launchpad.net/~zlatkopopov you can see that that user wasn't manually created in launchpad.
so, either the error was in kde's svn (it already happened about 1 year ago), or in the kde-->launchpad import system.

As Mikel stated, the bug seems to be present in KDE SVN upstream. If it's been solved there, it might be a bug in importing the translations into Launchpad.

Asked for more information to Mikel (Basque Ubuntu translation coordinator):

* In which Kubuntu versions does this happen?
* In which translations does this happen?

Asked Marcos Goienetxe (Basque KDE translation coordinator):

* In which Kubuntu versions does this happen?
* In which packages in the KDE SVN was the problem detected and in which revision was this solved? (I could not find an upstream bug report).

This was caused by an incorrect LANGCODE I added to kde-l10n-eu meaning the wrong desktop*.po files were downloaded.

Fixed in Karmic in 4.2.98-0ubuntu2, patch for jaunty-proposed attached (still need to wait for new langpacks to appear though).

Accepted kde-l10n-eu into jaunty-proposed, the package will build now and be available in a few hours. Please test and give feedback here. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you in advance!

Note: the corrected translations have already been uploaded to Launchpad. They will be released in the next language pack update.

In order to test this, additionally to Martin's instructions above on how to enable the -proposed software source, you'll have to include the semi-weekly language pack PPA in your sources. You'll find them, along with more instructions, here:

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-langpack/+archive/ppa

Thanks.

It seems this is not fixed yet.

All desktop_* files in the Basque language pack in -proposed are ok now (they no longer contain Bulgarian translations), but still all items shown when opening kickoff are displayed in Bulgarian (see attachment).

Extracts from an IRC conversation on #kubuntu-devel:

<dpm> Where (i.e. from which desktop_* file) do these translations (e.g. all categories under the "Applications" tab in kickoff) come from?
<Riddell> dpm: they're in /usr/share/desktop-directories/
<Riddell> which should be desktop_kdebase-runtime
<dpm> Riddell: are those translations loaded at runtime, or are they in some of those files in /usr/share/desktop-directories/? After doing an 'msgunfmt /usr/share/locale-langpack/eu/LC_MESSAGES/desktop_kdebase-runtime.mo' the translations in the binary file seem ok, I don't really know where the Bulgarian translations come from now.
<Riddell> dpm: they'll be loaded at runtime from the .mo file
<Riddell> maybe you have something cached in .local or .config
<dpm> I'm a bit confused, since the .mo file does not seem to contain the Bulgarian translations, but they are still shown. I can't see anything obvious under .config or .local, either

Any help in debugging this will be appreciated.

Hmm, after having restarted, this seems fixed on my test machine.

The fixes have been uploaded to the -proposed repository. Could someone from the Basque translation team test if this is fixed for them? Mikel?

In order to test this, simply follow the instructions in comment #9. Once verified, please reply to this bug with the result. It would also be useful to add the result of the verification to this wiki page -> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/LanguagePackUpdatesQA

Thanks.

Sorry for the delay. The life out of launchpad kept me busy.

I updated the language packs to 1.9.04+20090803.2 and cleaned any old remaining.
Now, almost everything shows in basque.
Only "printer settings" remains in another language. I attached some screenshots showing the wrong strings (I'm sure it's only one package, ).

After speaking to Riddell, here's what we've found out:

<Riddell> dpm: ok it'll be because we patch system-config-printer-kde (I write it for Kubuntu and sync back to KDE when they re-open their archive) so our .desktop file doesn't match up to the translations in KDE

So we've agreed that the best option will be for the Basque translators to translate the following strings, which will be released in the next language pack update (the one after 9.04+20090803.2):

@Mikel, could you please translate those in Launchpad?

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/kdeadmin/+pots/desktop-kdeadmin/eu/1/+translate
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/kdeadmin/+pots/desktop-kdeadmin/eu/2/+translate

@Martin:

After having verified kde-l10n-eu, I think it can be uploaded to -updates and marked as 'Fix released' once done

For the translation updates, I've opened a new task for the Jaunty language pack to keep track of it.

Done.

I reviewed the whole package, and it needed another 2 fixes.

There should be nothing left on this matter.
