What is Linux? section never answers the question

There's lots of text about Unix but no mention of "kernel", what it (Linux) does etc.

Getting started with Ubuntu 10.04, Revision number: 729
Prologue, pages 8-9

I'd suggest a simple rewording the first sentence in the section from:
Ubuntu is built on the foundation of Linux, which is a member of the Unix family.
to:
Linux is a member of the UNIX(R) family of operating systems, and is the foundation on which Ubuntu is built.

I think the wording is OK. If any changes is to be made it should focus on the the "kernel" part, not the "Unix" part..

Wording is fine to me...just need some info on what the Kernel is/does. If nobody has an objection I'll start working on this.
