Bug Description

When searching for source package "openoffice" of Ubuntu, the correct package "openoffice.org" is returned on the *fifth* page of results, after interminable language packs.

To reproduce:

1 . Go to https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+search

2. Enter "openoffice" in the main search input box

3. Go to the bottom of the results page, click on "Last »" and find "openoffice.org" halfway down the page at result number 470 or so of https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+search?text=openoffice&start=450&batch=75

The top 3 results are "iirish", "thescoder" and "libextractor", which are on the face of it pretty unlikely targets for someone searching for "openoffice".

This problem is still there. I just searched the Ubuntu project for the package "linux", but it does not appear at all on the first page.

Can confirm this problem. The search results are very strange:

1) there is way too many results, why not restrict to fewer (more abstract) packages?
2) the search results are not displayed alphabetically, very hard to find what you are looking for.

Please take a look at my own duplicate bug.

I mistakenly reported this problem as under ubuntu do to the (to me) confusing layout of the launchpad website. Additionally I didn't give the person replying to my report enough information, as I was in a great rush to shut down my laptop but wanted to report the problem before I forgot.

There is a screenshot and some other information on that one.

Hi there

We recently had a sprint and discussed this very issue. We're re-designing the whole search process to make it a lot less painful by: presenting exact matches first, matching on binary packages only, and generally showing other results in an order that would be more expected rather than apparently throwing random ordering at the user.

Thanks for your patience!
