Bug Description

I don't get external sound on my computer, I only get internal sound on my motherboard speaker. This occurred after the switch on Intrepid to the 2.6.26.* kernel.

I was thinking that it was a problem with pulse audio, but I'm not sure

I'm currently using:

Kernel: 2.6.26-3-Generic
Processor ix86

Your pulseaudio could have set pc speaker as default sink as mine did.
Anyway i forced with uncommenting in the default.pa this, because killing pa daemon and running it from terminal complained that it something was using hw0,0 already.

  load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,0

But it might work without this.

I can confirm this.
The default sink is set to the pcspkr when using a 2.6.24 kernel. Had to change it manually to my sound card.

When I use the old 2.6.24 kernel from hardy I don't have this problem.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Confirmed that it still happens there with 2.6.27-3: the pulseaudio volume meter actually works, but I don't get any external sound whatsoever.

Please let me know if.how I can help with that.

For what it's worth, I'm on a T60p and also experienced the no-sound issue. I manually killed the 'pulseaudio' daemon and my ALSA applications could make sound again. That leads me to believe that it is a configuration issue, not a kernel issue.

ok after I installed hardy beta i only get sound from oss. sound does not work using alsa or pulse.
I also noticed that originally, I didn't have permissions to use an audio device and had to set it manualy in "users and groups"

On a Toshiba M70 (Realtek AC97, Intel branded) there is no sound through pulseaudio, also ALSA can't produce any sound as long as pulseaudio is active. In Pulseaudio Manager I can see that pulseudio recognizes ALSA device as input for Pulseaudio (capture) but it apparently cannot see appropriate ALSA device for playback, there is no default sink, entering the device path in padevchooser manually does not work either. I suppose there is something wrong about compatibility between ALSA and Pulseaudio. BTW, in case someone would ask, yes pc speaker ALSA module is blacklisted.

Had to look up possible sinks with padevchooser, the default was idd pcspkr
then set pci.xxx sink to use.

Also no sound here. Only very quiet cracks are coming through the speakers if I execute the following
gst-launch audiotestsrc ! pulsesink
OSS is working however
gst-launch audiotestsrc ! osssink

I got sound on Intrepid until the 8 Oct. then sound was broken by my daily updates
I am using kernel 2.6.27-6. All devices seem to be recognized. Pulse Audio Meter shows that sound is going to be send to the sound card. However there seems to be a problem with sending the correct data to the sound card, because only silent cracks are getting through, so maybe Pulse Audio uses the wrong audio format?

I missed it the first few times I read this page so I’m going to reemphasize it.

Sound worked fine on hardy. I updated to intrepid and installed Flash 10 and sound didn’t work. (Beeping worked though).
Tried the fixes above fixes and still didn’t work.
Menu->Sound&Video->Volume Control
Un-muted PCM and turned it up. Sound Works!!!

No matter if I change permissions on /dev to the sound device. Still no sound. I only get sound if I plug speakers on my
acer aspire 1692WMLi front jack. This works but sound on laptop speakers don't.

Sound also don't work on Windows XP SP3 nor Mac OS X Tiger. On Mac OS X Tiger I could get sound but with reboot and return to linux, sound went away also on Mac.

Any ideas????

Hello people...

I'm having a problem like that. My Ubuntu 8.10 (2.6.27-9-generic x86_64) "appears" to have no sound at all. I've tried everything described here, including to kill pulseaudio. But, as my laptop have 2 jacks, I've tried to plug amplified output and, at one plug I've got a continuous beeeeee... At the other, surprise, my music is playing but the signal appear to be so bad that I hear it far away!

I've run the alsa test script (after killing pulse and restarting alsa) and here is the information: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=4d884d0d41f0b7e31a9f4872388d1c3d835d50e1

I'll really appreciate some opinions.

I am using a Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop and I too have no sound. When I first installed Ubuntu 7.10, it worked fine, but since each successive upgrade (8.04 and 8.10) there has been no sound. Purely by chance I noticed that when I tried the headphones, the speakers (and headphones) worked. This is the case in both 8.04 and 8.10.

I'm using a Lenovo T61p. Sound worked fine in Gutsy, and mostly fine in Hardy. Since moving to Intrepid, it's hit or miss. Lately (last week or so) it's been all miss.

If I reboot, I get sound ... for a few minutes. Then nothing. Pulseaudio daemon is running, but I get "Connection refused" from any of the control applets.

If I kill the process (including a -9, or it won't die) I can restart it. I get sound, again for just a few minutes. I get this in syslog:

Jan 21 14:22:11 paul-t61p pulseaudio[25022]: ltdl-bind-now.c: Failed to find original dlopen loader.
Jan 21 14:22:11 paul-t61p pulseaudio[25024]: pid.c: Stale PID file, overwriting.
Jan 21 14:22:11 paul-t61p pulseaudio[25024]: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted
Jan 21 14:22:11 paul-t61p pulseaudio[25024]: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTPRIO, (9, 9)) failed: Operation not permitted

Then, within minutes, no sound. If I have the paman util connected, it will stop reporting good data then segfault, & report "connection refused" after that.

Last time I got annoyed and checked, the shell reported application "pulseaudio" was not installed (!) - even though Synaptic showed it as installed. I re-installed it with apt-get, but still no joy.

Everything's pretty much up to date:
2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 22:15:32 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
pulseaudio version 0.9.10-2ubuntu9.2
hardware 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

I haven't found anything like this searching bug reports. Anyone else see similar behavior?

I used the "killall pulseaudio; restart alsa; reset Sound Preferences to use ALSA everywhere" method. It nearly worked (the Test button no longer failed with "Can't connect" message). I then installed 'aumix' and turned things up manually. The settings there were very different from Sound Prefs. Cranking those up made sound audible. Hooray! Suppose I'll have to do this on every reboot.

I am new to linux, but attempted the instructions above and tested the latest kernel, installing:

2.6.30-999-generic

There appeared to be an error at the install stage, which was confirmed when I rebooted. I then get this error message:
