Bug Description
Binary package hint: mplayer
Im currently on the Intrepid repo, but I do believe that along with Intrepid, Hardy also has an old revision of mplayer.
The idea that sticking to mplayer's RC2 in the repos is flawed because the mplayer development does not in practice stick to standard release management principles. Mplayer does not issue regular official releases. SVN builds are typically stable and certainly since RC2, there is many significant bugs that have been fixed. Ubuntu users are getting a poor impression of mplayer from bugs that have long since been fixed. Importantly, mplayer is also a depedency in other video packages that again are having bugs because mplayer (and mencoder) has an old version.
Im not sure how it has been done in the past but enabling realtime cpu detection in the compile would be great.
I recommend these should be backported wherever possible as I see no risk to doing so.

I notice on the Intrepid repo atleast, that dependencies are wrong with mplayer and gnome-mplayer. For some reason libx264-57 2007-12-74 is auto installed instead of the better later version which is named libx264-5920080408. I think it would be better to use one libx264 package so that when it is updated all the other packages that use it can also be automatically upgraded to the new revision.
