Bug reporting interface needs a re-do

Launchpad itself

Bug Description

The ubuntu launchpad interface and bug reporting method are sub-standard. The system does not encourage users to tag and classify bugs appropriately (i feel). It does not try to group bugs that are similar / filter them down so you can view them in a 'tree' like fashion.

I propose the following.

-> descriptions for the various importance and relevance of bugs.
---> a tree like system like this

ubuntu -> gnome -> nautilus -> BUG -re bluetooth -> BUG 1 description (same problem using probability and filtering methods) ->bugs
BUG 2 (different bug) (general) -> ... ditto above.

Next, when a crash occurs and a user has _CLICKED_ the button to report bug, report the damn bug no questions asked. Then if they want to login / choose too they can have a different / alter the description of the bug and the tags that apply to it.

If the above is not done soon, important bugs will sit while they remain in the system impossible to find....

Thank you.

-> oh and we need to be able to edit the descriptions i did not realize that putting BUG 1 would link to bug 1....

Basically a user so far as i know can alter the importance level. This makes bugs hard to deal with for all.

~d+b, this bug report isn't very helpful, in that it doesn't clearly list a single actionable item.

Bug reports are especially useful when written in neutral, professional language describing a single problem with a clear acceptance criteria, so that it is obvious to the person dealing with the bug what is the problem, and how to determine when it is fixed.

In addition, you might find it helpful to take a look at our list of agreed bug tags listed in https://dev.launchpad.net/LaunchpadBugTags -- please don't add tags to Launchpad bugs unless they appear on this list

Ah ok. Sure. I didn't know about the agreed tags for launchpad.

My main point is that the launchpad interface is too restrictive on what users can apply to bug reports. I have no method of assigning an importance to a bug report. Also i do consider the above to be fairly clear in its meaning. If you do not think so that is fine.

Please read my comments before you mark the bug as invalid for incorrect tag use, which i was not aware of previously and have now noted.

Perhaps i should make this a wishlist ..?

I did not mark the bug as invalid because of the tags (those are easy to remove) but because it's hard to see what exactly to do about it. Some of the suggestions you made are quite interesting, but it's a bit of mix. Ideally, each bug should describe a single problem which can be addressed and assessed separately, so I was hoping that this bug can remain in Invalid and that instead you'd analyze the problem and file several bugs with actionable items.

For example, I can spot that you are listing problems with at least two very different components - the ubuntu bug filing helper and the launchpad side of things.

Fair enough. I will do report the bugs separately. Although i personally think they are related. However, as you state a bug should be ideally about a single thing and have a clear path to fix it.

I'm not sure why Tom didn't mention this, but we are doing a set of design improvements to filebug this quarter, starting in March. It would be cool if Tom could share some of the mockups so that others can see what we're changing.
