Bug Description

[May be a dupe but I can't find it.][

If you have not done a launchpad-login lp:bzr is accessed over http with no smart server. This is several times slower than using bzr+ssh. Any of the following would help:

1- accept ssh <email address hidden> (_may_ be easiest to implement)
2- accept bzr+http, perhaps from within loggerhead
 3- serve bzr over tcp

This is connected to simplifying and improving the way lp: works, but it can usefully be done stand alone.

This whole experience gives people a poor experience when they're first trying bzr and Launchpad.

Example http://groups.google.com/group/web2py/browse_thread/thread/261a360eaba86b02/ebed44f7e03ad89e and thread "Default performance of lp:foo URLs" <https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/bazaar/2009q4/064762.html>

Or anonymous ssh would be the other option. I don't think it's all that attractive and may be unnecessarily slower & harder, but it may be worth thinking about.

After some measurement: ssh startup is fairly consistently 4-5s from Australia. For small operations this is a big fraction of the overall time. The main attractions of ssh are that it's a small change from current practice and probably won't find new bugs.

I was talking with Michael about this, and we think it shouldn't be too much
work to offer anon bzr access read only.

summary: - launchpad should offer an anonymous smart server
+ launchpad should offer anonymous bzr+ssh

Why change the summary? The former is more likely than the latter.

Because there are already two other bugs filed about anonymous smart
servers: one for bzr:// and one for bzr+http://

bzr (at least the latest version) will consume as much memory as data it is downloading from http so I think this is very attractive.

An alternative would be to provide the bzr smart server (rather than
just "dumb" access) over http; that should give similar performance as
anonymous ssh.

Cheers,
