Bug Description

Attempts to upgrade to the just released KDE SC 4.5 via the kubuntu backports ppa has failed due to 106 applications being blocked.

Investigation of this using 'aptitude full-upgrade' gave the following output (note, this is after allready installing/upgrading all the packages that I was able to using kpackagekit)

(There's some noise in there from a broken wesnoth update that also rolled out today, just ignore that.)
Most of it looks to be due to the kdebase-workspace failure, but there's also a kdebase-runtime related breakage.
This is on amd64.

After kdebase-workspace has built correctly for amd64, I was able to upgrade my system successfully, with a couple of hacks:

- libqt4-assistant had to be removed first
- kdevelop had to be removed first
- I had to "dpkg -i --force-all" the libqt4-help package, because of conflicts with one of the other qt packages (don't remember which one)

So far everything works fine (a couple of local cfg glitches, but all were easily solvable).

For the people that performed the upgrade yesterday (while kdebase-workspace was broken), your systems are of course broken. You might try installing again the essential packages which were removed (they are listed in this exact bug report several times).

It requires removing all kde4 related stuff. So if it is not so troubleshoot you, please supply detailed instruction on how to remove this package.

My upgrade was unblocked after the following commands:

sudo aptitude install python-qt4
sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-help_4%3a4.7.0~beta2-0ubuntu3~lucid1~ppa4_amd64.deb
sudo aptitude install python-qt4

It removed qt4-assistant, installed libqt4-help and I was able to continue the upgrade with:

sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude full-upgrade && sudo aptitude clean

After doing it, everything ran smoothly and I had KDE 4.5 installed

It asked about updating the file /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc

My two cents ;)

Similar to what Aggry said I managed to successfully upgrade to KDE 4.5 using apt-get -f dist-upgrade 3 times.
The process was interrupted twice due to problems with some of the packages mentioned in the comments above/
Issuing the following commands did the job for me:

sudo apt-get -f dist-upgrade ("155 upgraded, 86 newly installed, 14 to remove and 0 not upgraded" in my case; everything downloaded but while unpacking at some moment an error interrupted the process)
sudo apt-get -f dist-upgrade (the process continued and after a while another error ocurred)
sudo apt-get -f dist-upgrade (the process continued, asked about updating the file /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc in the middle, and then finished without errors)
sudo reboot

I'm not sure if the packages were pushed from the regular Kubuntu PPA or if they came from the backports per ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports, but this has been fixed for me.

I have managed to update successfully, but it wasn't a smooth or pleasant experience. It required several repetitions of "aptitude -f full-upgrade" to do it, similar to Alvin's experience in #17. In addition to the usual libqt4-assistant issue, the kubuntu-dev-tools package also had to be removed because it depends on kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4, which is a transitional package that shouldn't be needed anymore and was therefore not included in the update.

I notice a couple other comments mention the libqt4-phonon package causing problems: that's another transitional package that is unfortunately still listed as a dependency by some other packages. In my case it was pulled in by plasma-widget-bkodama; since I wasn't using that widget anyway, I simply removed the problem package ahead of time.

After reboot, my plasma activities were messed up and had to be reconstructed, and the notification area misbehaved a bit at first, but I think that has more to do with the redesign of the software than the packaging.

As of today, I could upgrade to 4.5 without problems (x64). The only problem I encountered was that I didn't reboot but only logged out and then kdm wouldn't display. I launched startx from the command line which gave me a working gnome environment, opened systemsettings, and changed configuration of kdm, then restarted. Everything went smoothly then. Of course there are minor things like plasma widgets which need tweaking, but that's normal.
