Same behaviour for me

Black screen after login

I can't install "kubuntu-desktop" cause of some broken packages

Rename ~/.kde didn't work

In /var/log/syslog I had some messages like (sorry for typo):

acpid: 1client rule loaded
acpid: client 1051[0:0] has disconnected
init: plymouth main process (390) killed bi SEGV signal

Same problem on amd64. I got around dependency problems during installation by alternating "apt-get dist-upgrade" and "apt-get -f upgrade". Everything seemed to be installed.

Is there an easy way to downgrade?

I had slightly different results from another machine, but them seem related so I will report them here. When I get to the login screen, the following message is displayed:

"Your saved session type 'kde' is not valid anymore. Please select a new one, otherwise 'default' will be used."

Logging in with default doesn't result in a black screen -- the background to the login window stays. However, it's still the case that nothing happens.

The only two session types are "default" and "failsafe". Interestingly, those were the only two options on the computer I previously reported on (although it does have a black screen after login, and does not have the above message.)

And then restart KDM, reselecting KDE as your session.

In my case, kdevelop was forcing libprocesscore4 and libprocessui4 to stay installed, while kdebase-workspace-bin requires libprocesscore4a and libprocessui4a. These new versions are incompatible with the previous ones. kdebase-workspace-bin was then REMOVED during upgrade to KDE 4.5, and this broke everything, leaving this blank screen.

It seems we need an upgraded kdevelop that doesn't depend on the old libs.

I must work with Windows :(

Same problem with architecture : X86_64.

After trying from XFCE :
- Plasma-desktop run.. exept there is no background ( white screen). I can move widgets on it. When I try to change the wallpaper, the desktop comboBox (where it must be written : icon mode, widget mode) is empty.

- Kwin works too and all Application.

I suggest it comes from interaction between Kwin and plasma.. When I disable kwin effects from systemsettings in XFCE, and I start KDE again, it doesn't work, but the screen has change color.

After trying to load : Failsafe session , it comes back directly to Kdm

For a not so tech savy person this would probably be the end of Kubuntu...

i can confirm that if you use aptitude dist-upgrade instead of apt-get dist-upgrade and in the question choose to change 1 package version (do not remember what it is) you will get working kubuntu. I don't know why apt-get dist-upgrade is trying to remove some general plasma packages on upgrade...

the same happens when updating to KDE 4.6 beta1. Manually installing kubuntu-desktop fixes it. The package libweather-ion5 seems to be causing the issue as it gets removed on installing kubuntu-desktop.

This happened to me also on a Dell laptop after enableing the beta repositories. Logged in to a black screen and a cursor. I did not try the fixes mentioned avove, since it was a laptop I was installing Kububtu on for a client. I just did a clean re-install with the normal repositories and all was well.
