Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdm

I am using Kubuntu, and recently I have upgraded to the KDE 4.5 RC packages (http://www.kubuntu.org/node/157). Aside from the upgrade procedure being a total, albeit not luckily once-in-a-lifetime disaster, there are some bugs that can be reproduced easily. This is one of them.

Before the update, kdm remembered the last successfully logged in user (me), and I only had to enter my password to log in. This is not the case anymore: I have to type in my user name as well. I am not ignorant to the existance of the new "Convenience" tab in the Login Manager page of System Settings; however, even though the Preselect User is set to Previous, the behavior remains the same (Actually, I think it had been already set to Previous when I checked it the first time.)

Screenshot attached.

I can confirm this. I'm using KDE 4.5 packages, from Kubuntu backports.

You can manualy fix this by yourself :

Open a terminal and enter the following :

cd /var/lib

sudo chgrp kdm kdm
sudo chmod g=rwx kdm

Reinhard: thanks, that (almost) solved it. Apparently you need to execute both commands recursively, so

sudo chgrp -R kdm kdm
sudo chmod -R g=rwx kdm

Now it works, but still it would be nicer to have a regular (automatic) fix for it.

Still not working here. Attached is a copy of kdmrc that worked prior to the release of KDE 4.5, but now I have to click on the user before entering the password.

Think this might have been fixed as when I turned the computer on this morning the log in screen was showing the previous user.

I can confirm that the chgrp/chmod fixes the problem!

Tried the command in #4, but got an error: invalid group. So it does not seem like I have a kdm group!

It's busted in the release as well as the RC I'm afraid. At least in my upgrade from 10.04 it was...

Since probably most of us tried the workaround from comment 8 it is difficult to know whether this is fixed.

On a clean install of kubuntu 11.10 I have not seen this problem

I do also *not* have this problem (and have not 'fixed' it myself) using 11.10. So I suppose it is fixed somewhere along the route?
