Bug Description

There is no way to say Eye of Gnome to sort the pictures in another order then alphabetic.
The best way would be if EoG would use the file sort option of nautilus
if this can not be changes easily an extra file sort option in EoG would be great

Killigrew, is this a duplicate of bug #387799? If so, please mark it as such.

Imho i agree. EoG need use nautilus sort order. this is the simple and intuitive way to work.

if you click one photo, press right, need show me the next photo that I SEE in nautilus, whatever is the order im using in nautilus, eog need follow

ps: bug #387799 its not the same as this one. #387799 its only about save-as dialog

This particular one has been bugging me for ages. There is no fix and the only way to get around it is to install Gthumb.

It is something so basic to be missing. MASSIVE oversight.
I've seen this bug before I think, being sidelined like many bugs here are. Hope it gets attention this time.

Can you please include steps to reproduce this behavior? I was able to reproduce it, I just want to know how this bug is affecting users in practice.

Steps to reproduce??

Open a picture folder
Sort by modification date
Open a file
Click next
Watch as EOG goes to the next file in order of name rather than modified date

It affects everyone in practice by not letting you view pictures in any sequence other than by name. How people have lived with this for so long, I have no clue.

It seems work is being done in nautilus to allow us to read settings like this. See http://blogs.gnome.org/alexl/2009/06/24/data-about-data/ for more info.

This issue is too complicated for a trivial fix, so it's not a paper cut.

couldn't this be fixed if Nautilus used DBUS. Then other applications might know what is going on with the file passed in relation to its surroundings

Gthumb seems to be a good fix until they add the feature. This is less a bug and more of a lack of a key feature.

Real showstopper this one. Gwenview in KDE has the same problem. How can the main picture viewing programs on both major desktop enviroments have overlooked this for so long?

Still present in 11.10 beta2 (Oneiric Ocelot).

I understand the report as concerning the case where EOG is called from nautilus with one photo to display, and then the user clicks next/previous...

If however, eog is called with a list of filenames (e.g. from command line or a script), then it should really follow the order of the photos that it was called with. Unfortunately, it doesn't.

Most anoying bug since 2007 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eog/+bug/136740

And we are almost in 2013 With Ubuntu 12.10 and nautilus still cant comunicate with the default image viewer.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nautilus saves the sort order somewhere and there's a script created by Qubit that adds 6 sort types that you can chose from the terminal.... If i decided to come back to ubuntu i'll have to find the script and somehow manage to link it to the file where the sort order is stored.

..... but i dont know why nobody did it in the last six years.

Qubit sort order script at the bottom of this link: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=448979
