Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I start dragging (by mistake) a menu from the applications menu, and if I press ESC the operation is not cancelled.

Adding this to the papercuts, indeed feel free to remove it if you think it's not suited.

This issue is not really a usability flaw that is likely to affect an average user, marking invalid as papercut.

How come? Accidental drags do affect, and being able to cancel that makes it so you can stop that.

Affected me several times. definitely a papercut. it also works with items from Places. If I grabbed one by mistake I can't let it go. What i do is drag it to the panel then remove it so it wouldn't copy itself to my desktop if i released it there.

There is no point in discussing the papercut choice, but Mat: didn't it ever happen to you to drag a folder from "places" by mistake and start copying a huge directory in your desktop? It actually may even go unnoticed for a while if the drag happens quickly (e.g. too sensitive touchpads). My mother certainly woudn't notice what's happening except for calling me a week later asking me why she has two different copies of the same documents. I am more worried for her than for myself.

I think I find the cause: while dragging from the panel, the last focused window has the focus! E.g. try to start firefox, open its preferences, start a drag and press ESC. The preferences window disappears.
