Bug Description

Binary package hint: brother-lpr-drivers-laser

I am filing this from another system, will run apport-collect once the bug report has been submitted.

It seems lpia builds of the following Brother printers drivers are missing:

brother-cups-wrapper-ac - Cups Wrapper drivers for ac brother printers
brother-cups-wrapper-bh7 - Cups Wrapper drivers for bh7 brother printers
brother-cups-wrapper-common - Common files for Brother cups wrapper packages
brother-cups-wrapper-extra - Cups Wrapper drivers for extra brother printers
brother-cups-wrapper-laser - Cups Wrapper drivers for laser brother printers
brother-cups-wrapper-laser1 - Cups Wrapper drivers for laser1 brother printers
brother-cups-wrapper-mfc9420cn - Cups Wrapper drivers for mfc9420cn brother printers
brother-lpr-drivers-ac - LPR drivers for ac brother printers
brother-lpr-drivers-bh7 - LPR drivers for bh7 brother printers
brother-lpr-drivers-common - Common files for brother-lpr-drivers packages
brother-lpr-drivers-extra - LPR drivers for extra brother printers
brother-lpr-drivers-laser - LPR drivers for laser brother printers
brother-lpr-drivers-laser1 - LPR drivers for laser1 brother printers
brother-lpr-drivers-mfc9420cn - LPR driver for mfc9420cn brother printer

This effectively prevents installation of most Brother printers in any LPIA installs of Karmic.

Apport-collect won't run against this bug as the target package doesn't exist in lpia.

A probable workaround is described here, basically suggesting to download -i386 packages+dependencies from packages.ubuntu.com and install them using --force-architecture:

Packages.ubuntu.com seems to indicate this affects all Ubuntu versions since Hardy.

Looking at the changelog, it does not seem like the package was ever intended to target LPIA. So, sounds like a valid bug: if it was ever intended to LPIA, a reason should be given to why it was dropped; if it was never targeted to LPIA, a reason should *also* be given.

Marking confirmed, LOW.

I made these packages, the reason why they are only explicitely compiled in i386 and amd64 is that the lpr drivers contains pre-compiled binaries for i386. This is also the reason why these packages are in multiverse, since their license and package content is not completely opensource. I'm not sure if the binaries included in the lpr packages would work for lpia but if they do and that ubuntu developers also believe that this is a good idea, lpia should be added to the supported architecture of the packages.

This issue only effects Ubuntu netbook remix installs based on 8.04 (which use lpia).

9.10 & (from what I hear) 9.04 Ubuntu netbook remix have moved back to just using i386.

Jerone, thanks for clarifying that. Issues like this may guide people's choice to buy better supported printer or stick with i386. Can you point to a document indicating why UNR now uses i386 ? Or what is the advantage of LPIA ?

Well during 8.04 Intel pushed heavily to have special compile flags
added just for new Atom based CPUs. This is what lpia is, it's x86 but
with some special instructions that where supposed to just be in Atom
based CPUs. This apparently did not pan out and the speed benefit was
not seen.

So since Ubuntu Netbook Remix was targeted for Atom based CPUs. The
first version (maybe even 9.04) used lpia. With lack of clear benefit
and consequences ,with issues such as this, is why the I hear things
have moved back to just being i386 for UNR 9.10 (maybe 9.04 .. need to
verify that).

lpia is no longer supported, so this should probably be marked as wontfix:
