Confirmed. Say, for example, the 'aMule' description in:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ddtp-ubuntu/ubuntu/+pots/ddtp-ubuntu-universe/es/+translate?start=521

Which is translated into Spanish since 2006-10-08 (one year ago), but the translation is not in:

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/gutsy/universe/i18n/Translation-es

Surprisingly, the problem is still here (2008-07-28) in Hardy.

See the translated string:

https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ddtp-ubuntu/ubuntu/+pots/ddtp-ubuntu-universe/es/543/+translate

translated since 2006-10-08. However, the translation is not in:

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/universe/i18n/Translation-es

Please, can anyone take a look at this problem? It's very frustrating to see that your translation work has not been considered. I'm talking in the name of all the Ubuntu Spanish Translators team.

The problem is in main, too. Not only in universe. See the adept-manager description translation:

https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ddtp-ubuntu/ubuntu/+pots/ddtp-ubuntu-main/es/36/+translate

Translated on 2006-08-16.

The translation is not in Translation-es (Hardy & Intrepid).

Thanks for your bugreport.

I debugged this behavior today and it seems to be caused by a "feature" in the script that builds the translations file for apt. It used to only add a package to this translations file if all the bits of its description were translated. This caused a lot of packages like aMule that consists of a common bit and then a additional description to not show up when only the common bit of the description was translated.

I changed that now so that incomplete translations are put into the Translation file as well and that made amule appear in more places. I uploaded the updated translations to intrepid and they should appear soon. Please let me know if that makes the missing translations appear or if there are still some that are not displayed (there might be a bug hidding somewhere).

Thanks,
 Michael

Thank you very much, Michael.

It seems to be solved for intrepid! Now I can see the package description for amule & adept-manager in their corresponding Translation-es files, although the translations aren't in hardy. It could be great if the bug was fixed in hardy, too, due to its LTS nature.

Even now, its a great improvement! Thanks a lot again!

I think the bugreport could be closed for intrepid, and opened for hardy. If the problem reappears again in intrepid, we can then open it again.

Cheers,

Ricardo.

Thanks a lot for verifying this fix. I added a hardy task (for apt, the ddtp translations can not be associated with hardy unfortunately) as a reminder.

I'm a bit hesitant with the update to hardy because if there are bad translations, that may break apt-get update (because apt-get is not very clever and relies on correct translation data). I don't think this is a problem as the scripts try to be careful, but I'm not 100% sure :)

There is also the problem with QA, we can not review all new strings in all languages, so there might be mistranslations. That is essentially the same problem as with language-pack updates, so we should probably just have the same policy here as we have there.

I will discuss this with the stable release managers and I hope we can get a new version into hardy-proposed.

Michael, could you please update the package descriptions for Intrepid? There are strings translated in Launchpad but showing untranslated in apt.

For example: "An MSN messenger written in Tcl" (the aMSN short description). It's translated here since 2008-08-14:

https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ddtp-ubuntu/ubuntu/+pots/ddtp-ubuntu-universe/es/550/+translate

However, it shows untranslated in apt:

$ apt-cache show amsn | grep Description-es
Description-es: An MSN messenger written in Tcl

As well as gnome-app-install. I attach an screenshot to illustrate it.

It could be great if you update the translations before Intrepid release.

Thanks in advance.

Michael, the bug is still NOT solved today (2008-11-28):

FOR EXAMPLE:
------------------
- https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ddtp-ubuntu/ubuntu/+pots/ddtp-ubuntu-universe/es/551/+translate
("An MSN messenger written in Tcl") translated since 2008-08-14.

- $ apt-cache show amsn | grep ^Description
Description-es: An MSN messenger written in Tcl

ANOTHER EXAMPLE:
-------------------------
- https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ddtp-ubuntu/ubuntu/+pots/ddtp-ubuntu-main/es/1648/+translateç
("games for the GNOME desktop") translated since 2008-02-19.

- $ apt-cache show gnome-games
(Displays two options, one translated and the other untranslated):

  $ apt-cache show gnome-games | grep "^\(Description\|Version\)"
Version: 1:2.24.1.1-0ubuntu1
Description: games for the GNOME desktop
Version: 1:2.24.1-0ubuntu2
Description-es: Juegos del escritorio GNOME

Version: 1:2.24.1.1-0ubuntu1

Great :)

Thanks for your feedback, I fixed a number of bugs in the scripts that generate the ddtp translations recently and hope to do anohter upload soon. I already uploaded it to jaunty, to test just switch (temporarely) to jaunty, apt-get update and use apt-cache (or synaptic) to browse the descriptions. It should be more complete now.
