Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

After the upgrade yesterday (including a kernel upgrade to 2.6.20-13.21) my wirless card stopped working. Sadly enough also on the old kernel (2.6.20-12).
It keeps telling in the demsg:

[ 20.040000] ipw3945: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945 Network Connection driver for Linux, 1.2.0mp
[ 20.040000] ipw3945: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation
[ 20.040000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:03:00.0[A] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 21
[ 20.040000] PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:03:00.0 to 64
[ 20.040000] ipw3945: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
[ 20.064000] IBM TrackPoint firmware: 0x0e, buttons: 3/3
[ 21.964000] ipw3945: Radio Frequency Kill Switch is On:
[ 21.964000] Kill switch must be turned off for wireless networking to work.

Hitting the FN+F5 key changes nothing. Also echo'ing various numbers into rf_kill in sysfs does nothing.

Laptop is an Lenovo X60 Tablet.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Now that the 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon release of Ubuntu is out, we were wondering if you can still reproduce this issue. If the issue is still present in the new release, please attach the following information:

* uname -a > uname-a.log
* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log

Hello!
Unfortunately, I have the same problem with the new 7.10 Gutsy system. Fn+F5 can't change anything.
My laptop is Lenovo T60 with ipw3945.
The requested 4 files are attached.

This is not a bug, though it occurs frequently.

The recent Lenovo Models (x series in particular) have a Wifi-Kill Switch on the bottom of the machine (think under the right side of the left wrist).

If the switch is set to OFF, then this will be the error given during boot. The switch must be set to ON (green plastic underneath switch will appear) and this problem should be fixed.

Hope that helps!

Fred

I'm sorry, that should read "under the right side of the right wrist, aka the middle of the laptop, under the edge."

Hello Fred,

Thank you very much! You are right! I found the switch, only it's not
trivial to find.

So a lot of thanks!

Best regards,
R. Attila

Great, that makes me really happy.

I almost had to re-install my cousin's machine because of this problem,
until we booted without the gui and saw this! It was really funny because I
own a x60 too and should have totally known (as well as being the linux
geek) but he picked up on it.

Best,

F
