Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

This is a predictable malfunction which affects VLC & Totem Movie Player.

To recreate the malfunction ... Enable Desktop effect, then play any video media and the view port goes black, if you shake the window it returns briefly but the symptom continues if again you move the window or play a new video clip.

If, during playback you deactivate the desktop effects, video output is immediately restored.

I have an ATI Radeon 9600 AGP video card. (would be happy to give you the entire machine spec if yo need it) - oh Ubuntu 7 beta

PS> You guys are saints, and your dedication is inspirational, thank you! and I love the effects, nice work.

This is a bug in the Xv implementation in the ati driver.

The open source or closed source ati driver? This happens with me using the open source driver. I can't get the closed source driver installed.

No, it is not bug in Xv implementation, because I have the same bug all over again when I enable Desktop Effects. Problem is there that no Xv can be used, but GL backend should be used instead.
For this I tried to use gstreamer0.10-gl plugin. It installed fine, however I met several problems:
* I tried to open www.quicktime.com trailer via totem-mozilla plugin. This ended with opening seperate window and showing video three times faster as necesary
* To change backend I had to press ALT+F2, gstreamer-properties, and then select for Video sink custom and type in "glimagesink"

This should be fixed at least to Feisty+1

I have this problem with totem-gstreamer. My video card is ATI Raden 7000/VE and I am using not restricted driver. At the moment, I am solving the problem minimizing the totem window and maximizing it again.

I am on Edgy and i have exactly the same problem but only in vlc.

I found a special solution of this with no any install or change in config.
I discover something funny with this bug. If you open two instance of vlc by rapidly clicking 4 time on the video icon it opens two instance of vlc :-) but what's really fun is that one of the two works perfectly.
No black screen you can reduce the window and open it again it still work you can get in full screen or use the cube to go on another desktop if you come back the video is still playing. And no problem with the opacity of the window in movement. That where all the problem i get with only one instance of vlc.

I have ATI radeon with open source driver and xgl compiz.
Sorry for my language but i speak French.

Hope it help to find the bug.

I have this problem with Intel GMA on-board video (mac mini intel), plus desktop effects enabled. MPlayer is the only one that works right for DVDs with desktop effects enabled. (Changing VLC preferences to avoid xvideo will work, but at a cost of slower video and interlacing effects).

With desktop effects disabled, VLC and Totem both work well.

I can confirm that the "start two VLC instances"-workaround works for me too, however I'm on a Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03).

Same for me with Intel GMA950. This seems not to be an ati-specific bug.

Happens to one of my clients on a Compaq Presario 6000. When I turn off Desktop Effects, the DVD in VLC is as clear as ever.

I have the same Problem with ATI Radeon 9250 on feisty, with "ati" and "radeon" driver. It happens with compiz, beryl and compiz fusion.
Googleearth is also affected and unusable with activated desktop effects.

Same problem here with Ubuntu 7.04 on Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller. gxine works fine and Totem Movie Player shows video only after moving, clicking, freakin with the window. After desktop effects are disabled all is nice in Totem.

But those effects are sooooo coooool. I need them desperately.. ;)
