Bug Description

The touchpad on my Dell XPS 1530 keeps breaking. This happens on a random basis at least two times a day. By "breaking", I mean that the touchpad suddenly stops working; I am unable to move the mouse cursor with the touchpad. However, if I plug in an external USB mouse, the cursor can be moved and used as normal. If I then unplug the mouse, the touchpad is still broken. I can get the touchpad working again by logging out and then logging back in.

Bug #868400 might be the same as this.

Please run evtest on a virtual terminal (ctrl+alt+f2), ala `sudo evtest /dev/input/eventX`. If that shows events, then something in X (or higher up the stack) has failed; if it shows no events then need to look into the kernel.

bug #868400 is similar, do you use gestures or 2 finger scrolling? does it happen in particular usecases?

I don't use gestures or 2-finger scrolling; my touchpad doesn't have those capabilities. It seems to happen randomly, although it's usually within the first few minutes of a new boot. I then have to log out, using ctrl+alt+delete, and then back in. This gets the touchpad working, and it never seems to fail again for the whole day. But the next day, the same thing happens.

I tried to run evtest as above, but I don't quite understand how to use it. Do I enter the whole command as above, or should the eventX part be replaced by something else?

I seem to be affected by a similar bug. Seemingly randomly, my touchpad on a Lenovo W520 stops working. The red nub keeps working, however. Restarting sometimes fixes it, but sometimes it doesn't. I can use fn+f7 to turn off my red nub, but it has no effect on my touchpad. I don't use two finger scrolling. I do use horizontal scrolling. I haven't tried any fixes mentioned above, or in this (http://bit.ly/qx2da3) thread, because it is working right now. The only fix I've tried is:

gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled true

That was not effective, nothing changed. I have disabled the function that disables the touchpad while typing, to see if that helps. Next time it breaks, I will start trying fixes, and report back.

This looks like a similar bug to: http://bit.ly/nDr6KB, http://bit.ly/qNZE1h, http://bit.ly/qafNGG, and maybe others. I'm looking through launchpad at related bugs now.

it doesn't seem to have a particular triggering event... it seems to be a random problem...but there must be a reason...

This affects me too. If it's going to happen on a particular boot, it happens the first time I hit Enter on that boot. Or rather, the first time I hit Enter that session (ie not when I type my password to log in to Ubuntu).

Is anyone working on this? Can we have one combined bug for all of the multiple mouse freezing reports? Is there a way to stop the Janitor bot from closing it?

Programmers may tend to use a desktop, but many users have laptops where this is a common issue.

Neil Padgett, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-input-synaptics REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
