As has been mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/dapper-backports/+bug/123753
There is a lot of requests for this.
I personally run a VPS with dapper, and want PHP v5.2 for some PECL packages, and as per http://www.gophp5.org/ there is a big push for a lot of Open Source PHP programs to be using 5.2 of PHP. Some projects, such as Drupal aren't supporting PHP v5.1 anymore.

The alternatives of compiling from source or pulling it from a later dist isn't exactly the best option to try on a working production server.

I can't dist-upgrade at the moment, nor should I need to when using a LTS version of Ubuntu only because the version of PHP is the one released on the 12th Jan 2006. Which is OVER 3 YEARS OLD!

Thank you.

I need this bug to be resolved badly, because I have no time to upgrade my poor old 6.06 server to 8.10.

Yes many people need this. But there is noone who can do it :(
I've managed to backport a 5.2 version, the cgi version is even running, but the mod_php5 gets a segfault, don't know why. At the moment i do not have time to debug apache2 (this is not a very easy task i think).

The main problem is the changed Packges after 6.06, there are so many changes regarding apache the APR (Apache Portable Runtime) and so on. So i used a Backport from hardy to feisty (found in a ppa, done by a paid man for a company) - but no success.

So stay tuned - maybe sometime it will work.

Anyone with Canonical comercial support here? Maybe we should ask them to provide it?

+1

maintaining a somewhat decent php version should be mandatory for any LTS distro.
