Bug Description
Forwarded per bug #624981 ("The Google Maps API server rejected your request") comment #36 ("<lifeless> Paul, please open a new bug about adding this feature back in; this bug is closed.")
As of today, Gmaps HTTPS is no longer a premium feature:

and so it could be reincorporated. I personally don't have an opinion either way, although it is useful to know that the option is now available in a zero-pay && HTTPS compatible fashion.

I'm going to wontfix this: we no longer have location metadata for people in the system; adding a mapping facility could be done but it really needs a LEP - which should only be done when someone wants to commit the time and energy to do this really really well.
