Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Upon Login via XDMCP & GDM (which is currently broken in maverick and requires a patch from LP: #408417) on Maverick, gnome-panel fails to launch.

If you log in the 2nd time after a system has started or launch gnome-panel manually, gnome-panel loads successfully.

In my .xsession-errors file I have the following:

The program 'gnome-panel' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied)'.
  (Details: serial 160 error_code 10 request_code 130 minor_code 5)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I ran 'xdpyinfo -queryExt' in the session where gnome-panel failed to load and the extension which I think it fails on is 'MIT-SHM' which has (opscode: 130, base event: 65, base error: 128)

With GDM auto-login set, I do not see this issue.

This matches with it working after a 2nd login as a successful gnome-session has been started at least once for that user.

If you reboot and only login via a remote session, you still see the issue.

Robert since you tried xdmcp for the gdm issues, did you run into that one as well?

I tested this inside my VM and I don't see the issue with manual login either.

My test setup is a fresh virtual (qemu) Maverick i386 install and the following steps:
1. Fresh Maverick install (tried with and without updates, with and without autologin)
2. GDM set to autologin (also tried with set to manual login)
3. XDMCP enabled in /etc/gdm/custom.conf
4. From terminal inside VM login, run Xephyr :1 -broadcast
5. Log in as the same user (also tried logging in as a different user).

seems like you are doing this inside a VM where you have already started a session / logged in? If so, because one gnome-session has run, you won't see it.

Try booting the VM and connecting from outside it without any session already running and without GDM set to autologin.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
