Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Hello. I noticed a weird bug in compiz. When I move the cursor on a long url in pidgin:

(18.30.09) <email address hidden>: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.nmconline.org/images/ecoli.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.nmconline.org/ecoli.htm&usg=__BnHbYFrFZsPIlKPxZmZcCQPpn9o=&h=248&w=360&sz=22&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=YkTS46ZSaWR-kM:&tbnh=121&tbnw=178&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmacconkey%2Bagar%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dubuntu%26sa%3DX%26channel%3Dfs%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D548%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=714&vpy=246&dur=4274&hovh=186&hovw=271&tx=249&ty=119&ei=B0XITN3HBcWcOp__nfAI&oei=ckTITOfZBpGgOoGwsfAI&esq=10&page=1&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:9,s:0

compiz somehow crashes and I get to run metacity instead with no effects. To get compiz back on again, I have to click the settings menus to appearance and get it running again. I will include a screenshot.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Unfortunately enabling apport does not produce any files in /var/crash. The crash is very easy to reproduce, just paste the text into pidgin and move the cursor on top of it.

I am not sure if crash is the right word, compiz gets replaced by metacity. Nevertheless, it is a bug.

Yes, I could reproduce the bug. Only in Pidgin but. When mouse is hovered over a long url, compiz stops and metacity takes over.

I can reproduce the bug too. Happens every time with a long link like google maps.

All of this will go away once 0.9 hits.

What's happening here is that applications are requesting to create
_absurdly_ large windows which happen to be larger than the maximum
texture size _hardware_ limit that your graphics card has. I believe
ubuntu has patched compiz such that it will freak out and kick you
back to metacity rather than attempting to crash your graphics
hardware by creating huge textures out of those huge windows.

Compiz 0.9 will support tiled texturing, so the window will still
appear, it will just span over multiple textures (although this will
not be noticeable to the user).

You'll get Compiz 0.9 as soon as all the Unity-Compiz related stuff hits ubuntu.

Cheers,

Sam

Is this a dupe of bug #567025 ? It sure looks similar. I get similar misbehaviour when hovering on large in-text citations in Zotero / OpenOffice.

Hey latrom,

Hi, have you had a chance to test if this bug is still present in natty?

If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty
and run the command:

  apport-collect <bug-number>

which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting
natty. (It is best to run this right after reproducing the problem.)

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
