Adding image as type 'automatically detected' fails

Bug Description
Adding the attached image to a new document by:
1. New document
2. Insert -> picture -> select file
3. Ensure type is set to automatically detected
Image wont add, saying:
'Error importing file /home/chris/
If you change type to jpeg, the file will import without problem.
