3) What is expected to happen is when one does a fresh boot with the ethernet cord plugged in, wireless hardswitch turned off, then log in, unplug the ethernet cord, and turn on the wireless hard switch, Network Manager populates networks within range immediately.

4) What happened instead is Wireless remains disabled with no networks in range, even after waiting a few minutes. In 12.04 it notes "wireless is disabled by hardware switch".

Please see screenshot.png for scenario where the ethernet cord is plugged in, wifi switch on and no wifi networks populate Network Manager.

WORKAROUND: Reboot the pc with the ethernet cord unplugged, wireless hardswitch turned on.

WORKAROUND: In Ubuntu 11.04, with wireless hardswitch turned off, ethernet cable plugged in, perform a clean boot. Disconnect ethernet cord then turn on wireless hardswitch and notice no wireless networks in the area. Perform the following via the Terminal:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo stop network-manager
network-manager stop/waiting
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo start network-manager
network-manager start/running, process 5172
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no

Notice one may see wireless networks in range and successfully connected.

Hi,

Thank you for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better! Unfortunately we can't start working on your problem yet because this bug report does not currently contain enough information to understand the problem.

Could you please make sure you do a clean boot of your system with wireless turned off and the ethernet cable plugged in, then unplug the cable, flip the switch, and take a copy of /var/log/syslog to attach to this report?

Thanks!

This is really weird, according to the logs you would have booted with wireless enabled, then disabled it after unplugging the ethernet cable. Could you please confirm that wireless is enabled in /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state (you will need to stop NetworkManager first, which can be done with the "sudo stop network-manager" command... turning it back on after the file is changed is with "sudo start network-manager").

Please also attach the output of the "rfkill list" command after a clean boot.

Thanks!

Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre thank you for working with me on this bug. Regarding attached var/log/syslog I turned of the wireless hardswitch, plugged in the ethernet cable, restarted the computer, unplugged the ethernet cable, turned on the wireless hardswitch, performed sudo stop network-manager, waited then performed sudo start network-manager, performed rfkill list, then copied var/log/syslog. Wireless networks did not populate at any point during this process.

You should be able to edit the file /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state to change WirelessEnabled to true, and that's normally all you'll need to have wireless connections populate in the applet.

In Quantal, booted with ethernet plugged in, hardswitch turned off, removed ethernet cord, turned hardswitch on, unchecked Enable Wireless, checked Enable Wireless and WiFi network automatically connected.

This works for me.
