Bug Description

[Workaround]
Use a 2.6.36 kernel. e.g.: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.36-maverick/

Binary package hint: xorg

The screen does update very reluctantly unless I move the mouse. This can be seen very well e.g. in sytem monitor resources. The graphs move smoothly as long as I wiggle the mouse, if I stop the graphs only update in fits and bounds. This does not happen always, but the system has gotten into this state rather regularly for as long as I have been trying maverick afair. The system also leaves this buggy state by itself. Often within a couple of minutes. CPU and IO load are normal at all times.

I have the same video card, and I have noticed something similar when playing back videos (mplayer, vlc, youtube), and the video's also go smooth for as long as I keep a key pressed (such as the shift key).

Ah yes. Holding down a key works for me, too. And it is easier than wiggling the mouse.

Happened again with a current live maverick usb stick booted via loopmount.
Details:
It happened when I plugged in the usb umts modem. I had done not much more than open the resources tab of system monitor (which makes the bug easy to see).
Continuously moving the mouse makes graphics update smooth again. Pressing a key like shift does not make it quite as smooth.

FWIW I have seen apport-gpu-error-intel.py "close unexpectedly" more than once.

On maverick with the newest mainline kernel 2.6.36-999-generic #201010021408 SMP Sat Oct 2 14:11:40 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux and xorg-edger I have so far not seen this bug. I saw this bug with stock kernel and xorg-edgers, so it seems the kernel makes the difference.

Happened in Kbreakout (game) on an Acer Extensa 5635Z. Tried Robert Hooker's https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/638813/comments/5 .drirc workaround. That did not help.

I suspect the kernel is having fun with interrupts, but not enough information to make a diagnosis.
