Bug Description

Summary is pretty much self-explanatory. More details:

I have a separate partition mounted as /home. I filled it (remotely, via ftp if that matters), then logged out of User1 session in gnome and tried to log in to User2. The screen went black, then I saw "CLI black login screen" for a brief moment (less than a second) and it returned to GTK login screen, just as if I just booted the PC (no errors, not anything that would tell me what went wrong).

Bug 47145 describes a similar but not identical issue. Ideally, both will be fixed.

I have removed duplicate on the general case of bug 22842, because I believe this programs (GDM, KDM) need special measure not touched by https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HandleNicelyLowDiskSpace?action=show
specification that I just began to wrote.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

Well, I don't think I've had a full /home after that incident. If you want, I can try filling, but I don't think it would make any sense - especially that it's 2 dist-upgrades later and I don't have that hardware mix anymore (not that I think it's hardware related).

I think this bug has been solved by implementing the following blueprint.

https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/boot-login-with-full-filesystem

since the blueprint is marked as implemented status, i'm marking this as fix-released, this is for gutsy, if anyone can reproduce this bug in the latest Gutsy Gibbon, please re-open this report, i was unable to reproduce it.

Changed in gdm:
status: Confirmed → Fix Released

I don't believe this bug is fixed because it assumes that deleting or removing files will solve the problem. I tried this fix and I'm simply told that the disk is still full even though the disk usage utility indicates that I now have 3.6 GB of remaining space. Maybe, it's because I have an encrypted disk. I am new to this so I don't know.

The https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/boot-login-with-full-filesystem solution no longer applies because you can't delete what's in your .trash file if you are using the new encrypted file system. Therefore, the solution is out of date because it doesn't work with encrypted file systems.
