Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The notification area does not show wireless nm-appet for some users.
I do not know what can change this behavior.
Batterry status is also shown on the account showing the wireless status,
Looking in the process list, nm-applet is only running on the account where the notification is shown.

Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release: 10.04
Kernel version 2.6.32-24-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Aug 19 01:12:52 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

Problem started after the upgrade from 8.04.

So far, it reproduces in the sense that I now NEVER see the nm-applet anymore, even though I have network access and network-manager apparently works (I have to restart it often at bad reception).
Please tell me where to look for more information than this.

jan,

Do you have any errors in .xsession-errors?

The initial issue you were describing is a known problem that is being looked at upstream. (I should find which bug this is again)

Reassigning to network-manager-applet so we can look at what's going on to have nm-applet not show in any user.

I have a similar problem :

Old Core 2 Duo system (one of the first Toshiba Core2 laptops), regularly upgraded (all the way from hardy to maverick at a minimum).

nm-applet does start (shows up in ps) but doesn't display anything in my "regular" account (the one I use regulrly to work an manage my system). Killing nm-applet and restarting it in a terminal window gives me :
** Message: applet now removed from the notification area
and nothing NM-related shows in the notification aera (which shows keyboard, sound and mail notifications OK).

Curiously, when opening a guest subsession or an old session created for another user, the old Network Manager icon appears and is functional (I can change network connections, verifiably) ... provided I kill first the nm-applet in my main session.

In this main session, .xsession-errors gives me a lot of :

** (gnome-session:3426): DEBUG: GsmDBusClient: obj_path=/org/freedesktop/DBus in
terface=org.freedesktop.DBus method=NameOwnerChanged
** (gnome-session:3426): DEBUG: GsmDBusClient: obj_path=/org/freedesktop/DBus in
terface=org.freedesktop.DBus method=NameOwnerChanged
** (gnome-session:3426): DEBUG: GsmDBusClient: obj_path=/org/freedesktop/DBus in
terface=org.freedesktop.DBus method=NameOwnerChanged
** (gnome-session:3426): DEBUG: GsmDBusClient: obj_path=/org/freedesktop/DBus in
terface=org.freedesktop.DBus method=NameOwnerChanged
....

but I can't tell if this is NM-related.

This bug is quite annoying : NM is an important tool for mobile users (think VPNs...). Any news on this front ?

Well, this is already a known issue with nm-applet (design decision, some work is in progress upstream to fix it). I *know* there is a duplicate (and probably many others) for it that I use as a master bug, but I just can't find it for now ;)

Marking as Wishlist, it's going to get done accidentally for NM 0.9, but if someone has time to properly implement handing off the session bus/service on user switch, it could be added as a patch -- just look at the NetworkManager mailing list for the details, since this has already been discussed a lot.
